Heavy Rain...

So working at gamestop has given me a few perks, one being able to try games early. Heavy Rain came in today for PS3 and I picked it up. This game is quite different then most, basically you're playing through the choices (sometimes very mundane ones) of four people connected through a murderer. It's quite intense but the game plays like a film. You can change camera angles, there is intense background music, its just overall a cinematic experience. I started to notice that its a perfect tool for learning new ways to shoot a scene, frame a shot, ect... Anyways its quite difficult to explain but if you have a PS3 I suggest picking up heavy rain, you may not like the game but as a film maker I'm sure you will appreciate and enjoy the cinematic aspect of this game, its nothing like anything I've played.

I've got a copy pre-ordered at my local Gamestop.

I'm really pumped about this game, as it looks different from most of the games out there. Don't get me wrong, I like first person shooters and stuff like that, but its nice to have something a bit more unconventional and daring once in a while.

Interesting.

Can you save still images, kinda like Halo 3 with it's picture taking function?

not that i know of, that would be awesome, prepared to feel depressed while playing this game btw

I've owned a PS3 for a couple years now and this is maybe the third game I've bought for it (not a gamer). Digging it so far. The dialogue is a little clunky and I think I just guessed the killer's ID (i'm about halfway according to the rain-o-meter), but I'm having a fun time driving the narrative.

It's like "choose your own adventure" video game version? I've always wanted to make a film like that... video games seem a better media for that though.

I don't know. Screenwriters and directors seem to have enough trouble keeping a narrative progressing rationally as it is. Letting the audience choose the next scene seems like just giving up entirely...

I thought that the game's controls could be a great blueprint for other cinematic type games, but the story in Heavy Rain was straight out of those crappy paperback mystery novels you see being sold for $5 at the grocery store.

This sounds like a pretty cool game. All of my friends were telling me I should get it when it came out. I'm kind of like Zak though, I've had a PS3 for a while but I only have two games.

I'm afraid that if I get this, I'll spend all of my time playing it. Is that the case with this game?

the gameplay doesn't really seem to affect major plot points. it's more about how bad your going to lose a fist fight, getting a witness to cooperate by being aggressive or sympathetic. it's fun. more my speed in terms of gaming, i guess.

when I first got it I played for an hour, getting used to the controls. then, last night I played from 1am to 6am and i think I'm almost halfway thru the game.

just finished it. fun ride. the reveal of the killer's ID was a nice surprise, and motivated. but there is a massive plot hole where they played up something regarding the serial killer's identity, and when it didn't go in that direction, youre left scratching your head about the evidence surrounding this "misdirection". I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say specifically. I googled it and others have similar complaints. the game's writer/director addressed it in an interview as a "macguffin", saying every story is allowed one unexplainable event -- which makes me think he has no idea what a macguffin actually is.

Oh, and I accidentally killed off a main character. whoops!

I can't give up "Path of Neo" on the old Xbox, this is the last thing I need. LOL.

I know exactly which part you mean. The writers were doing some serious, serious cheating in Heavy Rain.

Fun game with great presentation, but the plot is full of holes.

Edit: And that "every film is allowed one unexplainable coincidence" thing is only true if it comes near the beginning of the story.
