Heartless: The Story of the Tin Man

Hey Guys,

I wanted to share a link to a film that I had the honor and privilege to be a part of as a grip and an intern. It is called Heartless: The Story of the Tin Man and it was produced by a film company based in Atlanta, GA called Whitestone Motion Pictures. It is the origin of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz. Here is their story synopsis.

"Based on the backstory of one of the most beloved childrenʼs novels of all time comes the extraordinary love story between a simple woodsman and a beautiful maiden. Not having many possessions but wanting to marry his maiden, the woodsman sets his heart to build a large and beautiful cabin."

It's been an amazing experience working with this group of very cool and very talented people. The film turned out awesome and I'm proud to say I was a very small part of it. Please check it out, leave some feedback, and support Whitestone Motion Pictures. They're a great group of people. Thanks!

Wow, yeah, that was fantastic. A few edits I would have done differently, and the male's performance wasn't perfect, but the story is brilliant and the production design is amazing.

Incredible. I'm especially amazed by the suits. I would love to pull of something like that for a robot. I have no idea where one would even start with that.

Yeah, the suit was amazing. There's a video lower down on the page where the suit's builder, Matt Silva, talks about the design and a little bit about how it was made. It took him around 40-45 minutes to get put the entire suit on. Awesome stuff.

amazing video, really nice grading, any details on it? Or on the production in general.

The characters, voiceover, cinematography were all great. I cant even think of anything i didnt like?

(Maybe cut the ending short?)

Great film. The only thing that threw me a bit (aside from a couple of acting moments) was the black smoke coming out of him. It just didn't look right at times.

That's nitpicking though. This was fantastic.

Thanks for the comments and feedback guys.

jonE5, there are some BTS videos towards the bottom of the page that give some info. It was shot on the Sony Cinealta and the Red.

Thanks Michael. Glad you liked it man.

Don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but, what was the budget on this film?

I was watching this thinking...hmm..."This remidns me of a short I saw called, That's Magic!" And, then, low and behold...BAM! I find out the same team made it. :-)

Beautiful stuff. I'm envious of the glorious content you all produce.

Good question. Honestly, I'm not sure what the grand total on the budget ended up being but whenever I was on set, creative solutions were being found instead of just spraying things with the money hose.

Thanks ikander. I'll be sure to pass on your compliments to the director and rest of the crew.

LOL...yeah, the Cine was the primary but certain things called for the RED to be used.

Hey there, this is Matt Silva from Whitestone motion pictures and P.D. Productions.
I saw a couple questions i might be able to answer. The film was shot almost solely on the Cinealta, with a rare exception for the Phantom HD shots and a very very small amount of insert shots filmed on the RED.

The entire production cost just at 30K
Filmed over 2 weeks with about 3-4 short extra days for inserts
Hope that was Helpful!

man this thing is phenomenal (and I only had time to watch the first half so far), great work to everyone involved, can't wait to finish it and see all the BTS stuff. very inspiring :)

Man, I went back and watched everything I could on the White Stone site. You guys are awesome (Matt, Brian, and anyone else who might be reading). I really dig your style and what you're trying to do. Great stuff, I'm always a sucker for a great fairy tale (I watch Pan's Labyrinth a crapload).

Anyone who hasn't checked out their other stuff definitely should, particularly Bobby Watkins.
