heART for the kids

Man...this looked really good. i loved the lighting in the painting shots...the back light is really nice! and then it looks like u have a hazer in there lol. I'm guessing it was cold that caused the haze?? and then the spray increased the haze even more adding more to the backlight effect. Was that natural or u lit it? nice dollys.
Just all round looks good to me :) lemi go watch it again :D dvx baby!

oh and really nice cause also....that painting rocks.

Thanks, the haze was from so much dust in his studio. We used compressed air to kick up the extra dust which added a lot of atmosphere and the spray paint helped as well.

I lit the scene with two 1k's from behind and up high, thats it.

Beautiful work. The only concern that I had was breathing in dust, paint and other particles in the artist's workspace. I agree with all of Jambredz' observations. Keep it up.
The DVX100 (in all of its manifestations) is an amazing tool in the right hands. Again, great work.

Feel a bit torn after watching that.
The lighting is absolutely stunning. Beautiful images. Really shows the dynamics of that camera.
On the other hand the underlying issue is just heartbreaking.

Thanks for the kinds words, yeah its a tough issue to even comprehend, as Shane said in the video, you don't even want to go there in your mind.

Really, really nicely done!
Great piece, great art, great storytelling, powerful, tragic backstory.

Beautiful lighting and a great approach- I thought I saw the stands up top behind him (barely, not a problem).
It's incredible how the light bounces off the canvas, becomes his keylight!
And how it's a pool of light in his dark studio, looks like a window of daylight as the single source.

What type of 1Ks?

Love the CU detail shots- dripping paint, shoe, his eyes (intense!).

Do you mind sharing your scene files/grading?

I almost wish we saw more of the interview by the finished art (or for longer), it's such a great shot, and the art is sad/beautiful... but the shots that cover the interview are great too!

Did you shoot in Cambodia also?

Great stuff man, and great project!

Thanks! Yeah I know the stands are visible and I tried covering them with a welding jacket in his studio. I just went with it anyways.

I have two Lowel DP's that I used. At first I had just one on, but it wasn't reflecting enough light onto his face for the CU, so I went with two to get a proper exposure. Came out nice, and it made his face really glow.

Shot 24pa with scene file settings zeroed out with a CINE D gamma. Cut in FCP and graded in Color.

Also shot the stuff you see from Cambodia as I'm currently cutting a full length documentary from that footage.

Thanks for watching,

Thanks for the info.
Again, spectacular lighting!!! Wow, Lowel DPs, who knew???

Good luck with the doc!
What will you or the organization do with it?

The light stands actually fit the background somehow--not a detraction at all. Curious what you used for the nook light behind the welders? That seemed like a perfect spot to bring out a little background detail and it looks really good---150w maybe?

The background accent light is just a cheapo silver dish clamp light. Like ones you'd find at home depot. Can't remember exactly, but I think it was a 100W.

I wanted to bring in some detail and definition to that background piece, plus without it, the background would just disappear into oblivion.
