Hearing Audio Frame by Frame

Is there a way to hear the audio as I advance frame by frame in my timeline? I used to use premiere, and when I would move frame by frame down the timeline it would let me hear the audio frame by frame, in case I was trying to line up a shot to the music and I needed to hear exactly where the beat hits, etc. Does anyone know how to do this in vegas 5, or is it even possible?

I've been asking them for this functionality for the past few years since I switched over from FCP. Frame by frame audio monitoring is very important.

In Vegas 6, they added a feature where you can drag the playhead along the timeline and hear audio. However, this is nowhere near as efficient as using the keyboard to advance one frame at a time and listen to the audio (which still is not possible in Vegas). Even still, it appears that the playhead-dragging functionality is tied someone to the scrub control in Vegas as even when you drag the playhead frame-by-frame, it sounds like the audio is speeding up and slowing down. Still not very useful IMHO.

If you'd like this feature, be sure to submit a product suggestion on their website so they know:

That would be useful, but with the audio mapping that it does with peaks, etc., I've never really had a problem timing to music and can always nail the beats as needed ... though sometimes it takes several passes to get it just the way I want it.

Well at least Im not the only one asking this. Didnt want to feel like an idiot. Cuz when you get down to it, you can only go one frame at a time, which is not that much distance, but some songs Ive worked with happen to be half a frame off, and I was like, are you kidding me? I didnt know that was possible. And since you can only move one frame, I cant figure out whether I should go half a frame early or half a frame late. It drives me crazy. Sometimes I need to hear it to be sure. I guess I'll keep exporting to Premiere to double check anything. Ahhh... hopefully that will change someday.

Actually, you can move events in Vegas by the pixel, which is something I've never heard of in another NLE. So depending on your zoom level, you can move events by less than a frame (as long as Quantize to Frames is turned off) by using the 4/6 keys on the numpad. This can be very good for working with audio as audio is not based on frames.
