headphones : recommendation ?

Any recommendations for quality headphones that I can use both for boompole recording on set, and also when doing sound editing in post-production? Currently I am using a $20 pair of Dynex (Best Buy brand) headphones (okay laugh; i am just starting out though, short films, not a whole lot of cash to spare).

After reading a lot about the 7506ers being the standard in the US, I got them because I needed another pair of headphones anyway.
After just half a year of low use (maybe once every two weeks) one side is dead.
I took our cameramans headphones, the Sennheiser HD25 the last shoots and must say, these simply are the best I have used so far, at least for on-location work.
You can replace almost everything on them if sth breaks.
And: there´s no reason to spent thousands of dollars on my mics and then skip on the monitoring...

I really guess my pair just was a black sheep, the Sonys probably are the single most recommended item here(?).
It just was when using the HD25ers again after some years, I knew these are THE headphones for me for field use...

First off, Id use different hps for different purpose. The sonys are great for recording, but if youre like me and sometimes edit without being able to use monitors, then Id recommend Grado Labs for this purpose. SR80's for under $100 and these things let you hear every mm of your audio mix, very important.

I have a pair 7506s and a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros (the 250 ohm version) and I much prefer the Beyers (though they are double the price of the Sonys). The 7506s have a much more pronounced upper mids with less bass response. They're great for dialog editing because you can hear every click and pop. My main dislike about the 7506s is their design. The earpieces rest on top of the ear, which makes wearing them for any extended period of time uncomfortable.

You might also want to look at the Sennheiser HD 280 Pros, which are about the same price as the Sony's. Their earpieces cup around the ear, which makes them more comfortable and also isolates you from you environment a bit more.

Another vote for the MDR-7506. A have a couple pair, but one of them (my field pair) has been with me since 1997.

I bought the 7605 a few weeks ago after reading some good comments about it on here.
And it really is a great headphone. Plus I got it new for under $90

I've got a bunch of 7506... 3 pair I guess? And one pair of 280 pro... even though I find the Sony more comfortable, I've grown fond of the Sennheiser for their additional isolation. Plus the Sony occasionally loses an ear pad... they need to revise that system. For some stupid reason that pad comes off a lot easier then it goes back on.

Thank you for all the comments and advice, all. I ordered the Sennheiser HD280, they look pretty good, definitely better than my $20 Dynex (Best Buy brand) cheap headphones.

Thirding the Senn HD25. There's a bit of an Atlantic divide here.

I also recently gave the Ultrasone 650's a go recently which were both very comfortable and sounded great.

7506 yes, I once had some KOSS phones with only 5 OHM capacity...cant find them anymore, but those were my favourite then, you could plug them into anything, even an electric guitar :-)

I love my 7506s, but I wish they had a different (maybe modular) cable/jack system. That long coiled cord can be a pain.
