Headphones affect tape quality?

I followed the advice and picked up a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones. Now, they're packed in my video case with everything else, including used and blank tapes. Is this a bad thing to do? Will the magnets in the headphones affect the quality of the tapes?

Good question. I suppose technically that's possible but I've never heard of DV tapes being magnet affected before. Anybody had anything like this happen?

I don't think headphones have magnets -- they have electromagnets, which is different. Electromagnets are only magnetic (for all intents and purposes) when electricity flows through them.

See if a small paperclip will stick to any spot on your headphones. If not, then you should be safe.

They do have magnets. The real magnets oppose the electromagnetic force (audio signal) to move the diaphragm to make sound. That being said, you'd have to have the tape right on the magnet and moving back and forth very quickly for quite a while to have any effect. Practically speaking, I wouldn't worry about it.

This is good to know. When I did MRIs a guy in the building would drop by from time to time with a plastic bag full of audio tape for me to bulk erase in the scanner. A 1.5 Tesla MR scanner has a little more magnetic pull than those headphones, though.

MRI machines are fun! There was one at our uni. We had a bulldog clip on a long piece of string and it would point straight at the field.
