Headphone recommendations

I mix with phones in Resolve/Fairlight using meters. I then check on computerS and through decent monitors. You can’t rely on anyone having their volumes at the level you consider “correct”. Meters are essential.

Thanks for all the replies and I think I owe you guys my views so far.

FWIW, and stating that it’s really important to decide what you think, my view of the NTH-100 phones is that they are the best I’ve used to date. Maybe the two main criteria for phones are the sound and comfort. Okay, price comes into it but if you’re buying something that is important to your work it’s sensible to get the best you can afford. It applies to tripods, mikes, etc.

It’s hard to describe sound meaningfully. I used to be a hi-fi fanatic and I know I talked a load of BS trying to justify my spending. All I can say about the NTHs is that are incredibly detailed and unbiased. They don’t push or strain in any direction, bass, mid or high. They are just accurate. If the mix has strong bass, you’ll hear it. If not, it won’t be artificially boosted. Same with voice. Sound wise I can’t fault them and they easily beat any phones I’ve owned or tried.

Comfort wise, I’ve been wearing them as on-set monitors for a couple of days and then editing for about three hours in the evening and find them surprisingly easy to wear. Surprising because they are quite heavy but so far I’ve never felt the need to take them off for a rest. I can’t comment on reliability but they seem very well put together with good materials so I don’t foresee a problem.

The last word, obviously you should try before you buy but I think I made the right decision.
