Headphone recommendation please

Hi, thanks for the recommendation. The MDR-7506's arrived in less than a week, cost just $48 with free P&P and are just superb for the task. Many thanks folks. The ebay seller was worldbiz_cn and he has more in stock if anyone is interested.

they are not knockoffs? i suppose there is probably no way of knowing for sure. are they a good build quality?

If they are, they are exceedingly well made. The sound quality is as described in many forum reviews, the plug has the unusual screw thread adaptor and the build is perfect. If this is a knockoff, then the production cost would be the same as Sony's. Normally on knockoffs, they have done something to reduce the manufacturing cost. The packaging was OK too. It probably is just a 'grey' import.

Ah - I was going by impedance . thanks

Impedance is only a guide - the sensitivity figure is different.

Headphones are normally about 85dB to 120dB effiecient - the higher the figure the more sensitive they are.

Most tend to be around 95 - 105dB. over 110dB is good.

A higher impedance with excellent sensitivity would normally be better than a slightly lower impedance with lower sensitivity.

For battery equipment under 100 Ohms is fine with as good a sensitivity as you can get to maximise battery life by not driving the headphone amp too hard. Some recorders (I found this with my original Fostex FR-2) use low-drain components that only work well with very efficient headphones.

That's partly why the HD 25-1 at 70-Ohms impedance and 120dB sensitivity became the industry standard in the UK and Europe.

Update. My 7506's are knockoffs. There are some very detailed threads on headfi.org on how to detect the difference. Genuine items have a very tight leatherette covering on the headband, with no undulations. The bag is black with a stamped white logo, not just embossed. The stamped numbers on the adjusters are in line with the indents, not in between them and the bass on the knockoffs gets very boomy very quickly. That is how I detected mine. They sounded fine to start with after about 24 hours burnin but during extended use, the sound became a boom and tiz mess. I think the presence of many knockoffs accounts for the diverse opinions on sound quality. For instance, nobody disagrees on HD650's!

I think I will head for the HD25- second time around
