HDX200 for extreme sports

I'm wondering if the HDX200 will be a good camera for extreme sports shooters. Since P2 is very expensive and we don't bring a laptop or anything big to upload the P2 card, we will have to have many ... if we want ot have like 1 hour of footage. This is my first tought. Maybe it will still worth the price just to shoot in DVCPRO50 for the 4:2:2 color sampling. Other thing I was wondering is what about wideangle and fisheye with 16:9 native CCD? Is it possible to have a wideangle in front of the camcorder? If so, HD wide angle will be very very expensive....

In my opinion: YES

It is slated to be the best quality of all small cameras and a small camera is what you need for all the "rolling" shots. I've shoot in skates cause I am amazing, almost like Gretzky... lol j/k and a ton of people shoot in skateboards. For those types of shots what you need is a light, small camera. The viewfinder that swivels all the way out might help a bit too.

About the lenses, check Abel... they will be among the first to have it.

About recording time, if you won't have a laptop you might want to look into the Firestore type devices (FOCUS is not the only ones making this type of device). They offer an 80G drive... however, for skateboarding videos and such, P2 is the way in my opinion. You want the lightest package, the fewest moving parts, and you only need to get seconds at a time. You would LOVE to be able to review your shots and keep only the best ones, make notes and even leave a little soundbite of what you thought about it to remind you of what you came up with while you were out... A laptop would allow you to need only one card and download all of the contents every so often... you don't need to get a fast and expensive one... all you need is for it to have a big hard drive 40G 60G 80G but not even because you can just get an external hard drive where you'd be getting 160G for $100.- and by the time the camera is out it will probably be like 200G for $100.-

Just a note about lens attachments for the HVX200, the larger lens (82mm filter size) and wider angle (4.2mm) make it unlikely that current attachments will fit. Those that do still leave the question as to are they good enough for HD unanswered. It is possible that we may not have the answers to those questions until production cameras are available.

Unfortunately, larger elements and higher quaility almost always means higher cost-- but time will tell.

So if I understand correctly, there will be some wide angles lens available for HD 16:9 native camera. I don't know why but I was tought that a wide angle was going do distord the black bars at the top and bottom of the image...

What will be good for extreme sports is the variable frame rates at 720P even if I don't know yet the range of frame rates available. Will it be like 24P, 30P, and 60P or there will be more like 1fps to 60fps? Or you don't know yet.

ronik, we are doing lots of snowboard, freeski and mtb. the HVX will be great. i cannot wait for the 50/60 fps ....

P2 is no problem at all as we in our experience shoot maybe 5-7 minutes useable material per day. how many tricks simply do not work and can be deleted immediately because either the talent or the shooter didn´t like it? a lot!

we are also planning to use 720p for the time being anyway, so that should buy us more time per GB. and then...by the time the cam is here the P2 will be cheaper. and in the worst case....download the stuff to a USB drive while the kids hike up again ;-)
