HDW-F900R Vs RED ONE

Hi all
I have been in a shooting lately, for a TV series in Morocco.
I was surprised to see in that outdoor shooting that they use this Sony camera HDW-F900R along with one attached lens only.
My question is, after checking the price of this camera I found it very expensive comparing to a Red One, so WHY the choice for Alte Cine technology camera, is it a 4:4:4 with great compression rate issue -it records on tapes-? Or it is just a bad production choice? I know these guys shoot mainly indoor, and maybe this camera has a broadcasting qualities, maybe.
The picture of this camera is somehow flat with a very poor DOF, very saturated colors, with sharp details.
Top of that is this is an HD camera, while they have only SD in the region they are airing their program - Middle East-...
I'm coming from a 35mm Postproduction and shooting experiences as a VFX supervisor, and also from an indy filming background along with HVX200 - 5D MKII - SGPro and so did not get the camera choice at all.
The camera has no special FPS bonus, only HD, may be full manual control, I'm not sure about the sensor size....
Why?

becasue f900 is freakin' amazing camera, which has proper sensor, amazing quality
is extremely versatile, not like red and very well suited for TV usage. As for the image
sharpness, saturation, you can always tweak it in the presets!

btw, it's probably 5-7 times more sensitive than red one.

So acording to your specs (160 vs 600-800. i will not discuss them now, allthoug they are not correct) the camera is 2 or 2.2 times more sensitive. That´s way far from 5 to 7.

According to Sony, the F900 is rated at 300 ISO. That puts it at about one stop more sensitive than a Red One's "true" 160 ISO.

You answered it yourself -- the F900 is a TV camera. The Red One isn't. The Red is a digital cinema camera. It doesn't shoot video. The F900 does.

According to Sony, the F900 is rated at 300 ISO. That puts it at about one stop more sensitive than a Red One's "true" 160 ISO.

My personal oppinion is that rating around ISO250-320 for the red sounds about the best compromise. :cheesy:
Considering the Sony between 300-400 at 0 gain, yep, the sony wins.

Now in order to be 5 times more sensitive... the sony would need to be something between 10 and 20k ISO.

Five times more sensitive than 160 ISO? That would require 2 1/4 stops more sensitivity (each stop being twice as sensitive) so 800 ISO would make it five times more sensitive.

Five STOPS more sensitive? Yeah, that'd take 5,000 ISO to make it five stops more sensitive (or, using your 320 compromise, yeah, 10,000 ISO!)
