HDV output to DVD

I digitized the footage from the FX1 to FCP5. Then edited. Export through Compressor 2 using recommended settings. It all looked great. Then DVD Studio Pro to burn the DVD. It all seems really simple but then the DVD looks like crap?

What am I doing wrong? I've read a couple other threads that say you have to downconvert to DV before compressing for the DVD. Some other threads say that you use a Nattress de-interlace and that helps. This is getting really frustrating.

What do you guys output too with your HDV? Because from what I've been able to find online you cant output to anything without somehow downconverting it to regular DV.

Please help! :)

Sony FX-1

I just drop it in a DV timeline in FCP5, render and export in mpeg2 for DVD studio, I also deinterlace to make it look all pretty when Im shooting in cineframe 24 or 30. The result for me is a very sharp almost upressed DV look. I have no problem with the image it definently looks sharper than average DV.

They way I have come to understand the workflow is thus:

(1) Capture HDV m2t raw stream as normal

(2) Edit m2t either via an intermediate codec as normal

(2a) De-interlace footage (or leave alone if it is already progressive i.e. Cineframe25 or any other "CineFrame" mode). You could either use DVFILM or Within Vegas it-self, or any other software that will allow you to de-interlace

(3) Apply either an unsharp mask, or slight sharping filter. This is allegedly called a "low pass Filter"

(4) Render out to SD (720*576 PAL if you want PAL DVD) or SD NTSC size uncompressed (if you have the Hard drive ) or some other lighty compressed format such as MJPEG, this SD file should have full colour resolution in theory (4:4:4), I usually render out to Quicktime with MJPEG

(5) Encode to mpeg2 DVD, set to progressive and 10bit DCT. Or use floating point (in TMPGenc).

Hope that helps, that is only my suggestion.

A little bit over my head...lets see if I got it.

1) Digitize into FCP from the camera like normal.

2) Edit in FCP and apply de-interlace filter (upper or lower field?)

3) Apply an unsharp mask filter (any variables I need to know?)

4) Render out to SD (I'm NTSC). This part I don't know how to do. Myfriendimage said to just drop it in a dv timeline and render it out so I'm going to try that this morning.

5) Encode to Mpeg2 for DVD. Set to progressive? 10-bit?

I can encode a progressive DVD and it will look fine on standard televisions? And I don't know anything about 10-bit.

Is it ok for me to HATE HDV? Damn Sony with their bastard formats (digital-8 RIP).

EDIT:

Ok, I can use the de-interlace filter in FCP no problem. Setting it to 'upper' I guess. That's where my story ends.

I tried creating a 'DV' sequence in FCP to drop the footage into. Way too many options under sequence settings. Can anyone share with me specifically what to set the sequence too? Screen cap maybe? I need to preserve the aspect ratio too.

Then to compressor. Same deal. What setting specifically?? Will it stay in 16:9? Once I can see one way to do it I can probably pick it up from there. I don't have the time to experiment with every setting. DVD's have to be sent to the replicator by the deadlines.

I hope someone can bail me out here. :)
