HDTV Screen...looked good!

A friend of mine owns a Car Stereo/Home theater store. I went there today with a project that I shot with the DVX100 and edited on FCP. He played it on a 42 inch Plasma HDTV. I, the employees, and even some customers were saying how nice it looked. I did not use a anamorphic lens either.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

I edit all of my projects using a studio monitor and a Panasonic 42" plasma...some of the footage looks like HD and some people that watched some of my stuff actually thought it was shot with an HD camera.... and I don't use an anamorphic adapter either....

Gotta love that.   8)

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

So it means DVX provides the bridge not only between interlaced and progressive but also with the HD technology. It is really heartening to listen to these real life experiences. :D

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

I don't mean to bust anyone's bubble . . . I really don't . . . the DVX kicks ass and there's no question about it. It looks GREAT on TV screens both large and small.

But it isn't HD. It doesn't look like HD. Anyone who saw it and says it does isn't all that familiar with HD, or simply hadn't seen HD in a short enough timespan to see the difference. Heck, HD put on DVD (standard definition or 480p) doesn't look like HD (see Episode II).

I mean, everyone's got their opinions, and you could be looking at things like color saturation, etc., but the two just don't compare in terms of resolution and clarity. ESPECIALLY if it's stretched to 16:9 from letterboxing or squeeze.

It's fair to say that it looks awesome, better than any camera in its class. It does. But non-uprezzed, standard-def footage somehow being a substitute for (or a bridge to) HD? Come on -- it *is* possible to worship this camera too much.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

I disagree with that somewhat...some close-ups can be very comparable to HD where there is not a tremendous amount of detail to give it away. Most people perceive a certain quality when they look at HD and for those with a really critical eye, of course they won't be fooled. But they don't make up the large percentage of HD viewers IMO...

Anyway, this is more of a fun topic than trying to make a paper plane look like a Lear Jet.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

Well, there aren't a whole lot of HD viewers, period . . . ;)

However, I'll say that the particular style of HDTV you're watching it on probably makes a difference. I think the weakest HD is to be seen on CRT HDTVs; it doesn't look that much better than SD, IMHO. Plasmas and LCDs are pretty much comparable, but I still think RP looks the best at optimal viewing distance. Best overall, but DEFINITELY more film-like.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

I'll throw my 10cents worth in (probably less maybe 5cents ;D) I don't think that Plasma HD screens are much chop at all. I have been down to the local HI-FI stores and had a good look at their wizbang HD screens and have found the image to be unpleasant at best crap at worst, well for the money anyway and by the way I do have something to compare it with I have a HD capable CRT screen at home and the image is quite nice.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

here's my 2 cents...I plan on getting a nice 42 inch or larger plasma HDTV one day! I won't be paying no $7,000 for it but one day I want to get a nice one to hang on the wall.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

Watch for LCD's instead of plasma's... I haven't seen a plasma yet that had an impressive picture, but some of the LCD's have looked awful good. At the rate things are changing, you should be able to get a 100" OLED TV for about six bucks in another year or two... ;)

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

From my experience, worked on Sony 900 series, if you shoot on 24p on HD, that looks good for making drama, but if you use interlace 60i, I only liked it live-event. But thanks for the information.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

I don't know if you can find this screen in the USA.
It is made by a french company called "Sagem",and the products name is "AXIUM"

When i saw the picture on this screen i could not belive the way it looked. No plasma or lcd screen even come closer to the quality this screen produce.
The price for this 50 inch DLP flat screen is 4000 EURO (4800 USD).
The only limitation of this screen is the relative short life of the DLP bulb (up to 8000 hours).

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

I bought a Hitachi 50" Plasma last year and HDTV on it kicks ass.....It looks way better than HDTV on a RP or any LCDP/DLPP I have ever seen...There are no LCD's that size...I have no clue what some of you are thinking...

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

Good lord -- did your parents give you hundred dollar bills for each tooth you lost?

RP looks better than plasma. More film-like, less artifacting, no question.

Re: HDTV Screen...looked good!

Rather than play the "he said she said game" I invite you to wonder why when the best in the business telecine and color correct their footage what type of screen are they using to evaluate every detail, color, etc....a HD CRT monitor. Now why is that? ;)

CRT technology has had the better part of this CENTURY to get all the bugs out. LCD's will have their day but in the mean time dont believe in all the consumer hype. Believe the PROS.

RP doesn't come in small enough sizes for that to be practical.
plus lcd's have about twice the lifespan of plasmas.
Unless you buy the Sony KF-42WE610..  I had been considering this one for quite a while.  But, they're just WAY too many complaints about the projection bulbs going out.  Many within a couple of months.  And worst part, the replacements are usually backordered.

This is too bad, because for $2500ish, this LCD (albeit rear projected) had a very nice image.  I'll be waiting another generation before purchasing.
