HDTV Monitor

Moving up from my DVX100a, I just bought an EX1 and I need to quickly add a monitor for production use. I always had them with my SD setup but I just can't afford a pro HD monitor right now. I was hoping to tap into some thoughts from you guys with more experience with this camera.

I'm looking into a consumer HDTV mostly for focus and for production composition. I completely understand that I will not have proper color in a monitor in my price range.

I am presently looking into this monitor because it has a Rez of 1920 x1080.

Now here's my main question....if I was to consider a smaller REZ HDTV what is the camera output requirements? Will the camera output automatically scale to the size of the monitor used?

Now if I was to go with a slightly smaller monitor like this one below, I'm unsure how the output is sent from the EX1.....would it scale properly for a REZ of 1440 x 900 for this model HDTV?

I am trying to find a unit I can use for my EX1 but also use as a reference monitor when I shoot with my friend that owns a RED ONE camera. That camera I read send out a 720p signal. ...but I could not find any info as to what the EX1 sends out.

Thanks to anyone that can help me with this!! I have searched many forums and just did not come across anything covering this to my needs.

Thanks again!!

Do you plan to edit? Because you could buy a BlackMagic Intensity Pro Card ($199) and output to any tv with an HDMI connector.

Just transfer your footage on to your computer and then you can monitor it for color grading, etc...

Thanks for everyone's info on the monitor....I will edit too and I was looking into a Motu V4HD http://www.v4hd.com/ if and when I can afford that beast.

This monitor is mostly for use on set to help with focus and composition. Also for client to view from, crew etc.

Thanks GUYb,.....I checked out that Aja converter...seems pretty cool for HDMI conversion. Seems like that would be the correct signal out.

I was hoping I could use the component out until I can afford a better system.

Thanks Kenny_G for letting me know it does work. ...I see you have the EX3, I am a bit more restricted on outputs from the EX1. I may just have to bring my camera to Best Buy and ask if a rep wouldn't mind me testing outputs.

Thanks again!

The camera outputs standard 1080p, 1080i or 720p signals via component or HD-SDI.

It is up to your monitor to accept this input and scale it (if its not native).

No TVs have a HD-SDI input (you only get that on professional monitors), so you will need a HD-SDI -> HDMI converter. These cost more than the LCD you have selected.

Hey Guy,...you mentioned the camera outputs 1080p, 1080i and 720p....is that output selectable from a menu or is it automatic depending on the receiving device?

Thanks and appreciate the help!!

You can select from the menu HD or SD output and some picture formats.
With the 15" viewsonic I use the component output with a 25 foot extension cable.
I visually adjusted the monitor to the display of the camera to get a good indication of what iam shooting i.e. color and sharpness. Till now Iam very happy with it.
Pro: Small enough to take in the field(12volt converter needed), PAL and NTSC(NTSC tuner), even outdoors good brightness(with hood) and very reasonable price of about 200US$.
I made a bracket for the 4 holes on the rear of the monitor and mounted it on an umbrella stand. If I use a camera operator or a Jib I can see very good what the camera is shooting. You can also buy a sub 100$ component to HDMI converter, but the picture won't get any better imo. It is good and nice enough
Only problem is with the stupid Sony component connector. It is too small. Should have been 3 RCA connectors instead of the mini usb like connector. A HDMI output next to the HDSDI would have been nice also.
