HDSLR vs HMC150?

Im a current film student coming from an dvx100/JCV hm100 (what we use at school). I want to make my first HD cam purchase. Looks like alot of people are happy with there HDSLR's... But in what ways might the hmc be better? And what ways are the SLR's better? I like doing handheld stuff, especially low shots. Short films with the "film" look is what im after. Budget: No more then $4k. I will be doing audio separately.

Thanks guys,
-Kenny

Hi Kenny,

There are vast amounts of threads on this topic...

Short answer is the HMC is a better "video camera" when it comes to typical features, HDSLR is a picture camera that can shoot video. For shorts and films you will probably want to switch lenses - so you would need a 35mm adapter for the HMC whereas interchangeability of lenses comes with SLR naturally.

I use both...

Thanks for the quick reply. I see you have it all lol.. Why both gh1 and 7D? And what camera out of all you own do you enjoy shooting on most?

Good question... For what I shoot (events, concerts, weddings, etc) I pick up the HMC150 the most. If DOF wasn't so desirable I don't think I would have a DSLR. Thats why I can't wait for the AF100.

GH1 is a better "video camera" then the 7d imo. But it needs a higher detailed LCD and HD out while recording...

7D is a tad fancier and shoots the cleanest video imo, but its limited by 12 min record times, overheating, moire, no remote controls, limited audio capabilities and no articulating lcd. I really have it to shoot GOOD pictures if I need to...

For low shots, the 60D would be a nice alternative to the 7D since the 60D has an articulating screen and the 7D does not. The 60D is also less expensive.
