The excitement over the DVX and HVX is, of course, exactly what you describe: it's an opportunity to make something affordably, that looks like film rather than like video.

I was just answering the question: is it as good as film? Not by a long shot. There's a reason that film costs $30 to $100 per minute to shoot.

Is it (HVX/DVX) close enough to fool most of the audience, most of the time? Yeah, probably.

Is it good enough to do what you suggest (make a project to get yourself noticed)? Most definitely YES.

I was just answering the questions that were asked, not trying to divine what the reasoning behind the question was.

As far as directing, I primarily write and produce; I've done my share of directing and editing, but I tend to focus on writing and producing.

Dov Simens' film school is a fantastic program. It is chock full to the gills with useful information and will absolutely jump-start your career. If you need an injection of "you can do it", Dov delivers that in spades. I attended his course, bought the tapes, and then when I held the Independent Cinema Expo I invited him to be the lead-off speaker. Dov's got good stuff and his course is great.

I've got the Hollywood Camera Work DVDs sitting on the desk right next to me, but they're still shrink-wrapped; haven't gotten to 'em yet.

Ok, maybe its me, but to my eyes (at least) HD on the big screen looks better than
35mm in terms of sharpness, and cleanness (I mean really clean!). This is what I noticed when I was watching a few weeks ago, I think the trailer was "Wolfe Creek" I knew it had to be shot on HD because it was so damn clean and sharp, it made the other trailers (including the main film) look grainy and too gritty and soft.

Barry is this the same complaint people have about HD that it sometimes looks too sharp, if so for me at least its not a complaint but a compliment!

Thats why I think, if one is shooting HD, stop fighting its natural image (video look, 24P of course)

embrace the look , dont try and emulate another look, because frankly I like the look of HD 24P better than the look of film... you may disagree but hey its my view.

Low light question... I'm on a waiting list for an HC1 right now at a local shop, but then keep seeing alot of negative reports on low lit situations. I would be shooting alot of stuff indoors (indoor lighting)... does anyone know of a spot that has a sample clip/footage or indoor scene? Or could possible send me a short 3-5 second clip? I'm just currious if when people say it's not so good in the dark if they are being really picky? Perhaps if someone raw footage of a dimly lit room and/or a shot of a street at night?

(I'm currently using some old family Sharp Hi-8 from like 12 years ago or so... so wondering if the low light would be at least as good as its? or does anythign think I should maybe stick with a DV like the GS400 or something diff?)

Sorry to drag this up yet again, as it seems to be everywhere... but it'd be nice to see a sample of what some people refer to as "bad low lit quality" :)

Thanks,

James

James,

I'm swamped at the moment but maybe I can shoot some indoor stuff this weekend and post it, although I’ll post SD from the HC1 (HD works great I just haven’t figured out a way to encode it for online viewing).

The low light performance of this camera is pretty bad compared to the DVX100a or PD170 etc., but compared to your 12 year old Hi-8 it not bad. I had a Sony Hi8 and Digital8 when they came out.

If I were going to choose a DV camera to “stick” with it would be the DVX100b.

Thanks Chuck,

I would really appreciate that if you were able to get somethign over the weekend. I'm not sure about the DVX100b... the main reason for me considering the HC1 is it's size..so if I get a normal MiniDV, then I'd be looking at something of a similar size. SD clips from the HC1 are fine... 'cause they should show the same colours/brightness as it would in the HD right? I just have a feeling that it's not as bad as some make it out to be (at a consumer, capturing family memories and vactions, level).

Because of the nature of which I'll be using this camera, I won't be able to use external lighting. (I could for productions / short films or whatever, but I'm not about to make an extravaganza with professional lighting at a family get together for New Years Eve or something.. hahahaha)

HC1 is just great quality, great fun and an unvelievable treat for the price. Its only "weak" points are
a: Low Light: i also use an ZX1 and clearly you should use this for night scenes...

b:"too light": just above a pound, this baby is easy to carry but also needs great attention when shooting, not to shake abusively when long focus is used. But you get easily used to it.

C: Mike "average".

To encode from MPEG2 TS 1080 to SD , i think you can use one of these two solutions ( both are 59.95$ and excellent in quality..)

a/ Procoder express from Canopus
b/ TMPGEnc express.

May be the Procoder codec is slightly better, but the interface of TMPGEnc is great - and supports batch processing ...

Without going to SD, you could also use these front ends to keep the High Def encoding in WMV ...

I finally finished downloading some sorta video that is a bunch of sample clips, from what I gather, is from the HC1 (It's like called davidjapan hc1 clips, or something). Can anyone let me know if it's my monitor? or is it just my computer that any object in motion seems to have extreme interlacing going on? Still object in the video look amazing, but i'm just currious on why the moving objects look this way?

Here are some sample images/frame grabs to show what I am looking at:

(Video stills were extracted via a trial version of Vegas, however the video looks the same way when I play the original downloaded content, and viewed with windows media player)
