FS7: HDMI UHD output freezes the video on the VF

I have been playing around with the Shogun and I will use the Odyssey O7Q+ tomorrow when it gets here.

To record the HDMI UHD signal I understand that the SDI outputs are off from the table in the FS7 manual. But the strange thing is when I go to UHD mode on the output for HDMI it freezes the image on the VF.

The menus still work but the video in the back of the menu freezes and with menu off same frozen screen.

Interestingly enough the FS7 can record the video internally as UHD at the same time as outputting UHD to the HDMI. This works fine.

But it is a bit disconcerting to loose the VF on the FS7 when in this mode.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this the way currrent FW works? Or is my FS7 having problems?

Merry Xmas to all.

And thanks for any input on this, it has me a bit perplexed.

I think you need the extension unit to record UHD externally.

You can record 10bit 422 UHD (4K) from the HDMI not SDI. That part works fine, it is a very good recording on the Shogun, and tomorrow I will be comparing to the O7Q+ as well.

I think the freeze up of the VF is not correct and I will try reinstalling the update and do a complete reset Alister Chapman suggested this on another forum.

I will post the results here tomorrow, enough vid nerdism for one Xmas day.

Well I did a new update to the latest FW (downloaded from the link in this Forum) and then a complete reset.

Same thing still happens.

When I switch to HDMI UHD out then the VF freezes. But the signal to the HDMI is fine and can be recorded as UHD, I am using 29.97p. Same with 24p.

I called Sony tech support but they are closed until Monday, and I bet Monday will be busy. I will call them back then.

In the mean time is anyone else experinencing this?

The way it works for me is if I just set the output to HDMI QFHD, it is still OK, but as soon as I connect my Shogun to the HDMI out and switch the Shogun to HDMI in then the VF freezes. If I cange back to HD output everything starts working fine again.

I will try with the O7Q+ this afternoon as well, it is on the FedEx truck.

I am trying to evaluate all the functions of the FS7 and external recorders. I guess this is life on the bleeding edge...

Not that I'm in the know or anything, but I'm wondering if this is done on purpose to make you buy the XDCA Back Attachment to get 4K / UHD to recorders. Conspiracy theory :)

I just hooked up the Shogun at QFHD@29.97 via hdmi and it's working on both the VF and the shogun just fine. Have you tried resetting all the settings in the FS7?

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes have and I have installed the latest FW and done a complete reset after in the FS7.

So I must have a bad unit then.

Just to be clear, you can see and record the QFHD on the Shogun as 2160 and the VF on the FS7 shows all your pan moves. With mine the VF freezes at the last frame, before connecting to the Shogun. I can still record both internally and on the Shogun in UHD.

OK this is very interesting. And good.

The FS7 that was freezing the VF was my loaner from my dealer.

I just got my FS7 back from Sony service. It had a different problem that Sony NJ fixed for me very fast I might add, the SDI-2 was not working at all, repair stated they replaced a defective cable. That is great.

What is even better is thet UHD HDMI works perfectly with my unit I just got back from Sony, they also upgraded my FW, though I had already done this. This is according to the repair slip.

So the problem seems to be only with my loaner from my dealer. I guess it will have to go to Sony now.

I also got my Odyssey 7Q+ today so tomorrow I will be testing that with the FS7 and A7s. Busy weekend ahead...
