HDMI Spiltters, do they work?

I was looking to split hdmi for using multiple monitors for filming, I found some on monoprice for pretty cheap, I have heard however that they don't work, is this true, is there any way to make them work if they don't? Are there any ones for use without a power source?

Thanks

I use passive and powered splitters. Passive ones on ebay are like $6. Sometimes the order of what's plugged in matters with 'em.

The powered splitters are $12 on Amazon. Used them on a shoot with puppeteers who needed to see their movements. Went from camera to an on-camera marshall and a 22" HDTV with no problems and about 30' of cabling.

I use the $12 one in my edit bay, powering a production monitor and a big-screen TV. Works seamlessly.

+1 for the SmallHD HDMI splitter. I use it on the field for a 7 inch and 21 inch monitor without having to power the splitter.

How do you go about powering a 21 inch monitor on the field? Is it a generator that you use for that, or is there some type of battery power option for that?
Thanks

I use a 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC inverter. You just plug it into a cigarette lighter or power supply plug in a vehicle and then plug the monitor into the inverter. Make sure to have another vehicle there and a pair of booster cables just in case you run down the battery in the car you are pulling the juice for the monitor. Start the car up regularly to charge the battery. This shouldn't be that big of a deal, but don't temp Mr. Murphy. There are probably other ways to power TVs in the field, but this is what I have done before.
