does the addition of an hdmi port on "new" ex1r make monitoring footage easier? more accurate?

since the hdmi signal is thought to be "cleaner" can more reasonably priced monitors with hdmi ports be used in the field? in the studio?

i look forward to thoughts from the more experienced hd shooters.

Easier, yes. Cleaner? Depends on what you're comparing to. The EX1 has HDSDI, which is essentially the same thing as HDMI but carries more data (like time code). That connection is more often used by professionals as it can be routed over long distances easily, and the time code allows it to be used for recording onto professional grade recording systems.

HDMI added to the new unit will allow a good monitoring signal to a monitor placed close by, for either the camera person, or the focus puller, etc. It's certainly going to make things easier and cheaper for off-camera monitoring.

It would also make things easier for playback to an HDMI-equipped television. Consumer devices typically have HDMI, professional monitors and decks have HD-SDI. The nice thing about the update in the EX1R is that you now get both.

perrone/barry-

thanks for your thoughts.

using a quality consumer hdmi hdtv, i wonder if off camera monitoring will go beyond framing and even focusability and might extend to color rendition?

anyone care to share their insights?

thanks in advance

The only downer is, according to their data sheet, only one output works at a time.
It would have been great to be able to use the HDMI for monitoring and HDSDI for recording at the same time.
