FS7: HDMI output questions / problems

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but, it seems that I can't get a signal from the FS7 that my paralinx wireless transmitter or monitor can read, at 4k or UHD 24p. It's particularly frustrating because it puts out a good signal when the recording format is 30p, so I don't know why it can't do the same at 24p. Also, it works when it is recording in 2k. Just 4k and UHD 24p is bad....

ANYWAY, I wonder if anyone has any solutions to this problem. And also, what do you guys think of the cheap SDI->HDMI converters like this one http://www.amazon.com/Lenkeng-LKV368-Converter-Unlimited-Extender/dp/B00AYT76IQ

Anyone have experience with this? Would a cheap converter work? Would a better blackmagic one work?

Thanks
Max

I have the paralinx arrow plus. Update, tried it with an AJA SDI-HDMI converter, still no signal, although it worked when the hdmi went directly into the monitor.

Also tried a KanexPro sdi to hdmi converter, that didn't work either.

I don't know if it supports 4k, but the Sony can put out a 2k signal when recording 4k.

Anyway I haven't gotten it working yet.

These are HD video transmitters, not 4K/UHD. Go to the Paralinx website - it says HD video transmitter all over the place. Just because a camera records in 4K/UHD does not mean the video output for a monitor is in that resolution.

When recording in UHD (3840x2160), the FS7's HDMI output can be set to HD (1920x1080). See if that works for you.

Yes I know, actually 4k output through HDMI isn't even an option, only HD is, so that's not it.

4K output via HDMI is most certainly an option on the FS7. Better check your settings.

And with some devices there can also be issues with True Progressive v Progressive Segmented Frames (p v. pdf). You might want to try adjusting this as well.

Ah you're right, when set to record internally at UHD in XAVC L, it's SDI that seems to only do HD PsF, and HDMI that allows 4k, UHD, or HD, in progressive only. I'm not sure what effect changing the HDMI target between monitor and recorder has, or edge crop vs letterbox, but I haven't found a combination that works with the paralinx, and I have been working with it in HD output.

By the way good to meet you Mitch, I've seen your posts all over the internet and you're always very helpful and informative.

Nice to meet you as well & thanks for saying that.

I can't recall, but I think the FS7 may have a control to adjust the progressive output to p v psf. That may help.

Monitor v Recorder prevents viewfinder overlay information from going through. Wouldn't want to be recording that!

Are you shooting True 4K (4096x2160) or UHD (3840x2160)? If you are in True 4K, the output for HDMI may be set to True 2K (2048x1080) instead of HD (1920x1080). True 2K is not a signal that the Paralinx can transmit, so switch to HD.

If you are shooting True 4K, that is a 17x9 frame, a bit wider than HD's 16x9 aspect ratio. So if you select the monitoring outputs to be in HD, you need to decide how you will fit the 17x9 image in the 16x9 box. You can either chop off the sides or you can shrink it down and letterbox it.

I found a fix! With the Atomos S2H, I plug in SDI and it can output an HDMI signal that the Paralinx Arrow Plus and the SmallHD monitors can understand. At first the image on the monitor "tears" along the top during horizontal motion, but for some reason turning image flip on or off on the monitor makes that go away. I imagine it's because the monitor needs to reanalyze the signal to understand the conversion the Atomos is doing.

Not a horrible solution, and the Atomos is small and very easy to power, and it has an additional SDI output on it.

For the technically inclined, the Atomos is doing "2:2 Pulldown Removal" and turning the 24psf signal from SDI into 24p HDMI. The FS7 says it does output 24p over HDMI, but there is something wrong with it that makes it incompatible with many devices.
