HDMI Output is Low Rez??

So I hooked up my D90 to an external 720p LCD monitor and the picture was atrocious. I tried changing the settings in the D90 - I used the HDMI output settings at each resolution and it looks to me like it's uprezing a 4x3 SD signal when it's outputting 720p (it's pillar boxed). I was hoping to use an external monitor to help with critical focus, but if it's just uprezzing SD there's no real benefit since it mucks the picture up...

Am I missing a setting?

I don't remember having to set anything for the D90 to display 720p through the HDMI port. I think it may have something to do with your LCD's settings. Maybe if you say which monitor it is, someone who's experienced with it might help.

Sorry, that probably would have been useful info...

It's a ViewSonic n3752w 720p (1366x768 actually) 37" LCD TV.

May sound stupid but make sure you are in 720p D-Movie Mode, not one of the lower rez options. Also make sure your HDMI output is set to either 720p or Auto in the camera. Other than that it may just be the quality of the monitor or the fact that your viewing it at 37" :)

The movie mode and the HDMI are set to the correct resolution (in fact I tried all the different settings to make sure something wasn't amiss). Honestly it might just be the monitor quality, but I doubt it's the size I'm view it at if it's putting out actual 720p... I've seen plenty of HD content at lots of sizes and 720 should still look good at 37" on a native 720p display... I'll just try a different monitor and see if there's a difference.

Update... scrounged up another monitor. Man those ViewSonics suck! It looked fine on a different monitor with no change to the settings. Thanks for the help trouble shooting guys.

Sure. The only other monitor I had with an HDMI input was an HP 2207 22" computer monitor. It looked great on it, so we'll likely use it on the shoot (Since it's just here in the new "studio" we made space for.
