FS7: HDMI cable for FS7 with XDCA ?

I discovered recently when trying to record 4K to an Odyssey 7Q that none of my HDMI cables would fit into the HDMI socket of the FS7 when the XDCA adapter was on . Any solutions to this? Cables wth smaller ends. I hate to have to use a rt angle adapter because any extra connection on HDMI is dangerous.

Hmmm... I never remove the XDCA from my FS7 or FS7II and have no problems connecting an HDMI cable to the camera.

What brand is your HDMI cable ?
None of mine worked even when I put the XDCA on afterwards .

There is very little leeway there. I can't be the only one with this issue can I?

All Convergent products going back to the original Nano Flash, uses a type C HDMI connector or mini. This fall in between the normal (Fs7 or TV I/O and the micromini, which you would typically find in a DSLR. As far as I know all flavors allow similar info to pass. It's more about real estate.
So in your case Lenny, you need to get a type A to type C cable.

Allen, That's pretty obvious and I have cables that work fine without the XDCA adapter. My problem is that the XDCA adapter is wider than the body of the camera and if the type A HDMI connector itself is too big it won't fit into the space between the adapter and the socket. Maybe I just need to try a bunch more cables. I tried 3 the other day and none worked (unfortunately on the job learning experience), but I do have a few more and will try again. My HDMI Rt angle adapter couldn't make it either. It was too short to make the turn .
I'm surprised this doesn't seem to be a common problem, so I guess a lot of cables do work.
Please if you guys can suggest "reliable" HDMI cables that can slip in there let me know the brand.

Yes, a common problem. Can be really tricky if the cable is thick or the connector's molded housing is wide. It also feels like it needs to go in at a slightly weird angle.
For small onboard monitor use I bought a couple of '1M Velocity HDMI Rotating Cables' from Cables-to-Go a while back. Work fine with monitor but never tried recording (or attaching Odyssey or Shogun) through them, so can't vouch for that. I also use them with older Zacuto EVF. - the connectors twist/angle for tight spaces, and they do that at both ends. Both have held up well.

I ran an HDMI cable on a 90 degree adapter on a C100/Atomos combo for a year. I used adhesive heat shrink to make the HDMI knuckle very resilient. Worked under pressure on 2 demanding Himalayan solo shoots.

I have run into the same issue on my FS7m2 with the XDCA attached. It took a few tries to find a cable with a small enough "neck" to fit into the area where the HDMI is located on the FS7. The ones Wes. posted above look very promising!

My question would be, "why are you using HDMI to record 4k to the Odyssey?" The HDMI output is only 8-bit 4:2:2 vs the 10-bit 4:2:2 internal...

Moreover, why not use the RAW output of the XDCA to the Odyssey?

You know that's a good question - duh. The only reason was to save client the time in Post to transcode XAVC-I UHD to Pro Res to be more friendly with Premiere. But you bring up a good point. Maybe they're better off just taking the time in Post.

Re Raw - My understanding is that RAW 12 bit output from the FS7 not very good. Also I have no clients interested in working with huge RAW files.

Thanks

The FS7 RAW is OK, I mean is 12-bit RAW better than 10-bit recording, maybe sometimes. BUT if you take the RAW output into an Atamos or Odyssey, you can record it as ProRes 422HQ.

As I recall there was a lot of talk on this forum about 12 BIT Raw on the FS7 as being noisy and macro blocking in the shadows.

Yes Lenny, - and not just on this forum; the quality of FS7's 12-bit linear RAW has been a widely discussed subject. However, some time ago (after revealing and getting confirmed by Sony officially) that with over 30 fps framerates, the HDMI output is just 8bit 420 - I was forced to buy the XDCA unit with RAW SDI to make full use of my (then new) Shogun Inferno; I mainly have used this workflow for encoding excellent quality Prores/DHxHR 4k/UHD@50p but did some testing with CDNG encode; I set up a thread about the quality obtained and the discussion sparkled again... Since I personally didn't (and still don't) find in my FS7's RAW SDI output anything as offending to the IQ as the internally recorded XAVC-I everyone has been raving about, I uploaded a couple of CDNG frames from my Shogun for others to judge; here is what one of the thread participant wrote about it:

So... You would need to try for yourself to get an unbiased opinion, as the Internet is not always right (as we all know so well) :)...
