GH4 HDMI Cable clamp for the Varavon Cage

Reading through various threads, one picks up on the fact that many of us are not all happy with the readily available solutions to clamping the HDMI cable so it doesn't either pull out of get knocked, damaging the connection. Anyway I purchased a Varavon cage for my GH4 and was faced with just this problem, the cable clamp that came with the cage did not address the HDMI clamping solution, so with a bit of research and about 1/2 hr in the workshop, I arrived at what I believe is a very satisfactory solution.

This is the end result:

It's easy to use and solid. So how was this put together...

To start with I purchased a HDMI clamp from CoollCD.com love these guys and their gear is top notch. http://www.coollcd.com/smallrig-hdmi-lock-1283_p1283.html it's all of $42 so that's really going to burn a hole in your pocket..LOL!!

This is the clamp before any modification, it's designed to be mounted on a wedge plate.
First stage was to shorten the long slotted leg, by cutting it off at the top of the slot, a quick file to remove the burrs then two small pilot holes were drilled. The position of these is critical as they need to align with the solid section of the cage between the two larger holes at the top of the cage base:

Now, holding the clamp arm in place drill the first of the pilot holed through the base of the cage, then having selected the countersunk screws you want to use, mine are 3/16 BSW, drill a clearance hole through the pilot hole you just used to align and drill the cage, and then countersink. Next drill the cage with the right size 'tap drill' for threading, then tap the hole to suit your screw and mount the two parts together, before drilling the second hole and repeating the exercise.

Now you have the cage drilled and tapped and the clamp mounting drilled and countersunk:

Touch up with some black enamel paint and screw the two pieces together, then mount the clamp with the knurled know facing forward (lens side), making sure the cable and clamp are aligned ( there is plenty of lateral adjustment) and add a few washers to the clamp screw so it doesn't interfere with the mounting arm. You can replace the screw with a longer one and fit a sleeve if you want more room to turn the knurled knob.

Mounting this way round minimises the interference with the screen if you want it open.

Job done... Sorry about the picture quality, with the camera mounted, had to use the phone!!
If you get stuck, post so I can answer for everyones benefit.

I hope those with Varavon cage find this of benefit.

The New Honu Cage Version 2 is now on sale. (photographyandcinema.com or go to ebay). Much better job with the cable clamp on the Honu (compared to Varavon).

That one looks like a great find Bern! ;)

I have the Varavon, and it kicks ass - except for their crappy HDMI 'lock' that totally mangles your cable!

Been using the Honu cage with ours GH4 for a month now and must say that the HDMI clamp isn't really working for us. It still moves up and down and I know it's going to damage the HDMI input on the camera eventually. We are using a micro HDMI to HDMI adapter on the GH4 body though, so this might be what's causing the problems, but I doubt it as it isn't much thicker then a micro cable (I've cut off lot's of rubber from the adapter)...

Berni, the cable clamp you suggested would mount up ok on the existing holes, but you wouldn't be able to reverse the clamp so the knurled knob would seriously restrict the GH4 screen. Tried this way round at first on mine and was very much a no-go, the screen could only open to the horizontal position. This is why I turned the clamp the other way and lengthened the knob a little.

'ntouch', had a look at the Honu v2.0 and in all seriousness you can't call that a 'clamp',.. hook.... yes, clamp.. no way, the HDMI cable can flop around and will quickly stuff the connection, as KINOKS indicated. The cage though looks nice and it has much better access to the on-off switch, top function buttons etc, which is a BIG problem with the Varavon. Might seriously consider buying this as a alternative and I'll see what I can come up with for the clamp mechanism..

'Randomfactor', having mounted the clamp, I now put a gentle loop in the HDMI and use the Varavon clamp to secure it, before it feeds up to the Alphatron EVF, keeps everything neat, tight and in close

Looks interesting, how much free space is there around the camera, mainly for accessing top camera controls? Can you pop a picture up with your GH4 mounted?

I just received the Honu cage today and the HDMI clamp works great. If you tighten while squeezing the clamp closed there shouldn't be any up and down movement unless you're really being violent with it. Try squeezing it closed as you tighten.

Please to hear it's working for you Mico, the only thing that disappoints me is that it looks as though you have to use an allen key to tighten the clamp in place. It's one more bit of kit to carry around, and being small can easily get lost, whereas a screw knob is there permanently and if for any reason you have to disconnect, no hunting for additional tools.

Easily fixable if carrying an allen key is too much trouble. This is one of many options:

I always carry some tools because not everything is or should be hand tightened like an HDMI lockdown.
