HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

So far, so good, except....unless I missed it, Atomos should put a big sticky at the top of the Ninja page for Adobe CS5.5 users to be sure to turn off the analog audio inputs BEFORE recording. Granted, it isn't a problem with the Ninja, the files play fine in the Quicktime Player, however dropping files onto an Adobe timeline only to get an incompatible file format error, the Ninja would be the first suspect. One would think Apple could lean on them to get it fixed. Even if it just ignored the extra audio, it would be better than a show stopper (literally).

Bonjour, comment ça va? If you are referring to turning off the analog inputs, you just tap the Audio monitor button from the main screen and tap the analog inputs. Only the '3' and '4' audio meter blocks should remain 'lit' with the '1' and '2' 'dimmed out'. The clips recorded after doing this drop in Adobe CS just fine.

BTW today Atomos released their major firmware update - 2.01. I haven't been able to test yet but adds great new stuff inlcuding full speed/quality playback, timecode (TOD) and from LANC, file naming incl TOD and sequential, and bug fixes.

Playback mode full resolution, full frame rate. Scrub control, shuttle controls.
Timecode modes added – time of day, record run, auto-restart
Unit naming and HDD/SSD naming reflecting unit naming.
Occasional monitor blurriness fixed
Headphones control overlay on monitor and playback
Record button graphic improved Headphone and brightness slide controls now with interactive update

What do you mean by LANC. I'm not able to control my Ninja via LANC input. Tried two different LANC-controllers, but no luck......

I believe he is referring to LANC timecode generating and not the ability to control the unit via LANC.

Not available for download yet. Soon I guess.

hm, they could write it on website as normaly everybody does, it looks lame... thanks bgundu.

is there any discussion about how to reverse pulldown efectively (on windows)? i got quickly respond from ATOMOS:
Stripper is on hold as we have found a very cool application that does the 24p strip out from 60i wrapped 24p footage from cameras like to FS100 from Sony, all cameras do this on 24P.
The application we now recommend is "Grinder" from red Giant.

WTF?! i have found only after effects can do something like this but i am not 100% sure if the way is correct and i thought that it will be enought to rewrite some header, not to export all files and double space and use a lot of rendering time.

does anybody found how 60i wrapper pack EUROPEAN/AUSTRALIAN 25p? thanks for ideas...

It seems silly that this reverse pulldown is only available on the not yet available Samurai. I really hope they reconsider and offer a firmware for it. I intend on getting the Samurai anyway simply because my hdmi port is used up by my monitor, but still.

I really don't think that firmware can add the reverse pulldown on the ninja. It may require a more powerful processor.

That's disappointing if they got rid of Stripper. It's still all over their news pages. And Grinder a) doesn't work (I've tried!) and b) isn't free. Compressor works fine; not sure about on Windows though.

I am happy they got the FW out however.

Hi Dave,
I have a problem with the dock Firware, is not read by Lion, how do I do?
I can not even do the upgrade!
HELP !!!!!!!

videoarte: there is an email support which they react very quickly or pm here, is not it better? i think it is not relevant information for the others... i upgraded without problems.

Thanks for the comments on the Red record icon. I'll pass them to our design team. The rule with turning off is 4 seconds: just count it and you'll know when it's going to turn off (from the touchscreen or the "off" button on the right hand side as you look at the screen.)Dave ShaptonAtomos
David, we just did the 2.01 update to our Ninja, given all the updates I feel comfortable using this commercially. Thanks for the hard work on this, I see all the issues I outlined have been addressed!Good work!Colin

Samurai----- LAUNCH IT!

I don't know if you've seen the press release on our website saying (in summary) Samurai will be shipping during the IBC in Amsterdam, this September. It will include external power options (D-Tap) and - this is big news - SDI playout: full resolution HD playout onto any SDI-Equipped monitor.
