HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

As Barry wrote Final Cut is not the only editing programm that works happily with Prores files.

Oh that's a nice surprise! I thought I would need to transcode everything prior to importing.

About the naming conventions: yeah it does sound that the naming system could use a tweak or 2.

Adrian,
you're right. The combination of Pal GH2+Ninja is amazing for the price.

Clearly the source is interlaced and I use Jes for deinterlacing footages. I found these to be the best settings (see screenshots) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2888648/Jes.zip
Don't mess with values in the color tab and leave them as they are.

When you export for quicktime, mind that for some strange reasons After Effects and Premiere are not able to open these files. Actually all files being recorded on the ninja cannot be opened in AE and PP without previously exporting them to ProresHQ from quicktime. I don't know why and any help on this is really welcome.

Best,
Diego

Diego, thank you for sharing the footage. Could you upload some native clips? Maybe some green scenery and low light? Or whatever...
I've tried deinterlaced ones in Edius, they ran smoothly, so I'd like to test original video.

We have already tweaked the naming convention. From the next release all clips have unique names - even the 4GB "chunks" in adjacent folders.

Hi Diego,
I need to find a way to go from XLR out of the Sounddevice mixer to 3.5mm first .

Matthias

Which model of Sound Devices mixer do you have?
The MixPre, which I have, has a 3.5mm "tape out" at line level which should work OK. No need to use the main XLR outs.

For what I've been reading the Atomos is only recording full HD at 1080 50i for PAL lands. I surely would consider buy one but only if it could do 1080 25p. Is that an option for future firmware releases?

Ninja will absolutely be able to record 1080 25p and this (as well as 1080 30p) is scheduled for the next firmware release.

Always wait atleast 30 seconds after shutting the Ninja off before removing the harddrive.

Just wanted to confirm that with the new firmware (1.02) for the Ninja, this is no longer necessary.

Tearing of image

Tearing of image

Got my Ninja yesterday. Tested it, and I have following issues:

1) Doing quick panning with my camera (JVC GY HM100), made the recording on the Ninja terrible. I´ve got a lot of tearing of the image (upper part). Any firmware update ??

2) Naming convension on the files needs to be changed. The current naming is not usable for me. Why not using seperate names on the files (YYYYMMDD_XXX) ?

Can your system (PC, Video Card) handle playing high bit rate images smoothly? That's the magic question.

Great. So I'll keep visiting DVXuser for news regarding this and other issues some fellow members are experimenting with Ninja (or do you have some mailing list on your website?).

Just got the Ninja 3 days ago, did a quick test with it. It's wonderful, great quality, easy, easy transfer and post. I'll start posting some clips when I get a chance.

Audio Level Metering bars no info in the manual how it is operating only " orange by overload"
Is the analog level monitoring level overlayed while watching the Video as Monitor, or buried in the menu?

Hi all,

here is a clip of the sky I recorded yesterday, ungraded.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2888648/sky.mov.zip

I think this is the case where prores really helps since avchd would have had a hard time with gradations.

This morning I'm gonna test the ninja with a HDMI splitter from smallhd to see if I have any problem with the signal when connecting a DP6 and the recorder to the gh2.
Later today I have a shooting for stock, so we'll take the ninja in the field and see how all this rig works.

Best,
Diego

Hi Diego.
Are you in Italy?
Using a 7D now, but pretty interested in the GH2-Ninja combo if it goes fine like it seems.
Can we maybe meet somewhere, if you're in the north? I'm in Milan

edit: Bernareggio, indovinato?
Ciao
