HDMI Atomos Ninja Hard Disk Recorder 795$

1080 @ 25p please...
And HDMI-passthrough. How will I connect my external monitor? HDMI splitters are PITA - either small and not working or big and expensive

You raise a very good question: The AF100 records 1080 25p, but does it output 1080 25p on hdmi and hd-sdi?
I <think> 25p is output as 25p-within-50i, but I could be wrong. I know it has the capability to output 1080/24p as 24pSf.

No 720/60p support? 60p is mandatory for any action shots. 480x270 is not going to cut it for focus, so why bother putting LCD at all?

For playback perhaps? The FS-100 used to drive me crazy because you never knew for sure what you had on there; being able to play back clips to at least verify which is which, would be nice.

That is something I was wondering about with these types of external recorders. Can the other options (AJA Ki Pro or NanoFlash) playback the clips to an external monitor?

Well, the FS-100 could play clips back to the camcorder, remember... just couldn't do it on its own, or to its own little LCD. So a standalone unit just seems more appealing from that aspect.

Actually it does make very little sense to me. On locations where access is no issues, why not simply use a computer to play back the files. On the other hand where weight/size is an issue having lcd, which you can't use for critical focus is simply a waste.
Run and gun you don't have time to check anyway, until you are done shooting.

The Nanoflash can playback its clips. I usually have my preview monitor coming out of the Nano via HDMI so the signal just comes to the preview monitor for clip playback.

After watching the Nano & Flash XDR development, I do not think it is worth it to go cheap on an external recording device.

Convergent Design realised very early that the amount of testing needed for "pro" level reliability is massive.

If this company is suspect then it would best to pass. They sent me an advertising e-mail to my personal e-mail address. I sent an e-mail back asking where they got the address and have not recieved a reply.

I told them that their integrity with me is on the line without a proper reply.

Something don't ring true here.
surely these guys would have to pay some sort of licensing fee to apple for using their prores codec?

I would imagine this is what aja did with the ki pro.

and for 795 euros, seems mega cheap.

Its a bargain of the decade. on the surface of it all.

Also as far as iam aware if a video is sent down a hdmi lead from a camera its always interlaced instead of being progressive. I could be wrong so please correct me if iam. :banned:

Correction price is 1001$ and 795 Euro
HDMI 1.3 is deep Color
And ists not so easy to get full HD:
Canon 5d is not HD only SD whyle you recording trough the HDMI Output
Canon 7D is not 1920 x 1080 HDMI during recording the Picture is smaller and you see the AF Box in white plus Red dot recorded
Sony Nex 5 have HDMI Output with the Red dot recorded
SONY NEX 10 can recorded witout the red dot, as far as I know

And none fo these are really 1080p in resolution, at any time. Video resolution of the best of the above stated, in terms of actual resolved pixels, is more like somewhere between 480p and 720p, with lots of artifacts

No, not true .

This would be useful with a Canon HV20, a camera which supposedly outputs full 1080p HD via HDMI (prior to HDV compression).

i went through the thread and i am quite surprised that nobody is bothered by the fact that the RED DOT will be recorded on the footage. Full HD or not - if you have a red dot on it, you have to crop the footage down to nearly 70% of the view to make it useable ! I have been saving up to buy three of these. If the red dot problem is a fact i have to consider only one mini-KeyPro.

Not sure I understand where you're coming from. Are you thinking that the Ninja will record the red dot, and the KiPro Mini won't? If so, that's not correct. ANY external recorder, trying to record Canon footage, is going to record the red dot.

Hmmm. That's a shame. i have been considering purchasing an external recorder for almost a year now. This fact is not mentioned on any of their websites. Are there any prosumer cameras that shoot with blank recording screen ?

Most "prosumer" (loathe that descriptor) or professional video cameras can do so without issue; ie. clean video output. Most DSLRs can't (yet).

With all the buzz around these external recorders, i don't think many potential buyers know about their flaws. i think the forum should make a sticky post on the subject. Thank you guys for saving me 3x $1001.00. Their return policy will be used often by customers like me.

The "flaws" are with the cameras that can't output a clean signal. There's no way for a recorder to somehow remove something out of the signal it's getting. The video that comes at it, is what it records.

It's up to the camera manufacturers to be clear that the output signals are not for recording but for monitoring only. The problem is that DSLRs aren't video cameras. Oh they can record video. Some of them very well, but they still aren't professional video cameras (yet.)

Don't get me wrong, they can be used in a professional manner, by professionals, but there are some limitations (albeit in many cases artificial ones) on what they offer.

The issue that is affecting you (and many others) is something they could all easily fix with firmware though. Let's hope someone gets it right sooner than later.

Having said that, very glad you didn't find out the hard way they weren't the right device for the job! That's never very fun. Can't tell you how many times I've bought something only to realize it didn't at all work like I'd expected it to (*cough Euphonix MC Transport cough*).
