HD110 and DVHS

The original JVC DVHS (HM3000) won't recognize the HD110 or even play M2T's from it through virtual DVHS. (or any other application for that matter).

A little puzzling...I just recieved my JVC ProHD DVHS and it works fine with the HD110 and the M2T's that wouldn't work with the HM3000. I can play all other flavors of M2t's through Virtual DVHS to the HM3000 including ones from HD1, HD10, Sony FX-1 and Canon HV10. Only the HD110 M2T's won't play. But with the VD400, they are fine. Also, Vegas captures m2t's from the HD110 fine but the Pixela HD Capture that came with the HD10 won't recognize the HD110.

Anyone else having similar issues?

I don't know if it's an issue really. Doesn't the JVC DVHS HM3000 only work with and read m2t that are 15GOP? The ProHD camera's are 6GOP. It may make the two datastreams incompatible.

But he earlier 720P cameras from JVC like the HD10 use the 6GOP HDV spec as well. Those m2t's play fine on the 3000. And Sony 15GOP m2t's play on the 3000. There is a difference in the stream, but I'm not sure where the incompatibility exist.

Agreed, it's not really an issue now. But I had to buy the new DVHS unit to make things work. DVHS is still the best image quality for viewing HDV outside the computer.

Try a 30p data stream, it may recognize that.

Keep in mind that an HD1 or HD10 can play back an HD110's 30p footage, but cannot play back its 24p or 25p footage. So the D-VHS deck may not be able to either.

(note: when I say they can't "play it back", I should clarify: they can't display the footage. They can transport it such that they could be used to digitize HD110 24p footage, but they can't display that footage).

Did you have a chance to ask JVC about it? I don't know if the 3000 is firmware upgradeable but it may be.

Is the new deck a replacement for the 3000?

The other day I was on the phone with JVC tech support for about 30 minutes, most of which was on hold time. He sent me an email containing the specs for the HD110 and placed me on hold and then the call was dropped.

All of the m2t's were shot in 30P. Structurewise, the 6GOP streams should be the same. However, the same 30p m2t's recorded to the VD400 still won't play on the 3000 which I think is odd. I figured once the material was put on tape, a DVHS tape from the VD400 should play on the 3000. Not so.

Also, the KDDI HD capture utility won't see the HD110 whereas Vegas has no problem.

Just some small, odd incompatibility issues that, at this point are inexplicable but no longer pose a problem to my HDV workflow.

Now, if I could just put the last part on my HVX workflow, I'll be ready to go.

Thanks for responding. I'll do some testing and if I figure it out, I'll post.

The only difference I can see that could possibly cause compatibility issues is the difference in ProHD and HDV1.

From what I've been studying on HDV, HDV1 doesn't write anything to the audio segment of the HDV recording. The mpeg 1 layer 2 is recorded with the video layer of the 3 segment HDV structure. ProHD, however, writes the 2 channel PCM into the audio segment.

I'm not certain this would cause any issue with ProHD HDV not playing on older DVHS units but it is the only difference in the stream that I can see. If anyone has any input on this, I would like to hear it.
