HD100 or DVX100A?

I'll be shooting a doc in a few weeks. We are still in negotiations to rent 2 digibetas DVW-790, but if the price exceeds the budget the option will be using 2 HD101 or 2 DVX100A. This doc will be for broadcasting and it's about Bocage, a famous writer that lived in the 18th century. We will recreate those old times shooting with actors in places were the guy lived.

Which camera would be more indicated for this kind of shooting? I'd use my HD101 but the director has a DVX100A and says it has better image. I can't argue against that because I never made a side-by-side test. His theory is based upon things he has been reading, he never saw shootings from the JVC.

Many of you know both cameras very well, I'd like to read your opinions. Thanks.

Matthew, I think you forgot to paste the first link, and the second is not working. I'm aware that Tim got better results in low light with the HD100, I've been using his settings a few times. But I'm really interested in seeing both cameras results in daylight.

awww man. i suck at internet stuff. never got the hang of it with links and such. but i havent seen any comparisons in daylight. sorry about the confusion.

Thanks mmm, I spent the last hour searching for that. It's not easy to find things on DVinfo, there are lots of threads...

I used both. The answer is obvious. The HD101 is way way way better. obviously in comparison with the HVX that might be different. Anyhow - if the director has a DVX, he'll probably rather not admit his gear isn't as good or just wants to work with things he's used to... anyhow. These cams aren't in competition (look at the price e.g.) so choose what you need. Is 4/3 SD enough? Noisy images are'nt a problem? choose the DVX (that's the cheapest). 16/9? HD? .... choose the JVC...

The problem here isn't the cost of the cameras. I have a HD101 and can get another from a a friend, the director has a DVX and can easily get another. We will be shooting SD 16:9 and from what I read on DVinfo and after seeing Nate's shots, the HD100 seems to have better resolution but not so vivid colors. Maybe Nate didn't try to match both cameras settings. Mezelf, have you used the HD100 in DV or HDV mode? Do you have yours already?

Sorry, I meant to post them first time but was in a rush to leave so didn't have time.

From what I have seen, the JVC is going to give you better picture in SD. Also, I would strongly recomend getting a hold of some 35mm adaptors to get better DOF.

I still haven't mine yet - I've been using someone else's :-( . Anyhow. The default setting has indeed quite another picture than the DVX, but there are settings on the HD100 to spare. Tim dashwood published some settings to closely match the DVX100 if that is the coloring you like (somewhat saturated sometimes, I don't like 'em tthat vibrant - but that's my idea.
