HD100 & DVCPro50/HD

Hi all,

I've searched to see if this has been asked before but I couldnt find it. forgive me if this has already been covered.

I am saving up to get the HVX200 like a lot of people but I have been looking at the JVC HD100. I really like its full body camera with full size lens, 24p etc.. but I absolutley do not want to use HDV. The JVC can use firestore which records in whatever codec you wish....well is it possible to use the JVC with the new panasonic DVCProHD firestore due next year? This would mean recording in DVCPro50 or HD and bypass the useless HDV codec and make an impressive camera!! Please explain if I am being dumb and have missed something!

An excellent forum btw.!!

Thanks!

No, the FireStore for the JVC records HDV and HDV only. (well, and DV). The only signal the FireStore can record is what comes from the firewire port, and the only signal an HD100 can put out its firewire port is HDV or DV.

The only way to avoid HDV with the JVC would be to use something like the $15,000 Wafian recorder or an HD-SDI converter and a $25,000 DVCPRO-HD deck to record the analog outputs.

No. The JVC outputs HDV. If you want the JVC, you'll be getting HDV.

The JVC Does have componant out. So if you don't mind some cables coming out of your camera and running them to a computer with and Aja Xena card installed, you can have yourself UNCOMPRESSED HI DEF video!
DVCPro HD is compressed (7 to 1 -- correct me if I'm wrong -- but better than HDV).
I'm on the fence about which one to buy, myself.
How bad can the HDV be, anyway?

You can have UNCOMPRESSED HI DEF video from any of these cameras, including the $1600 HC1. There's nothing special about the JVC in that regard.

... but it is the only one with a proper lens Barry :-) (at least as far as handling is concerned) ... and that matters to some of us...

I don't think the 720p HDV used on this camera is a major weakness. The codec seems to stand up well. There are other aspects that put me off more - No "smooth" (50/60i/p) framerate; poor battery life; JVC's quality control.

Nice form factor though.

Yeah, I'll grant you that operationally it is very sweet, but -- have you seen what that "proper lens" produces?

That's not my shot, that's from DVInfo. But no matter how you slice it, that's just horrible. That ain't "proper" by any stretch of the imagination. Look at the massive green fringing and fuzzy definition on the right side of the screen on the black/white (er, gray & green?) chart. Look at the screaming glowing purple edge down the side of the chart. Look at the intense green glow on the lower right edge of the silver thing on the right side. Heck, look at the whole silver thing and see how it's tinted purple throughout.

Have you seen how the lens breathes? Here's a sample I made to compare my lens against someone else's, but seeing as Robert Niemann found this clip on my site and "outed" it, it's kind of public now:
http://www.icexpo.com/HD100/Hd100-breathing.m2t

Now, there's *no* zooming going on in that clip -- that's how the field of view changes just by turning the focus ring.

I think JVC's ergonomics are great and the handling is downright pleasant and the codec is reasonably robust (by far the best implementation of HDV), but come on, nobody can defend that lens with a straight face. The lens is easily the worst element in the whole package.

By having this lens on it, you know you can exchange for a proper lens if this one doesn't fit your idea of quality... besides, I'm not too worried about performance at maximum zoom. The last bit of the XL2 lens was bad, the last bit of this is bad... Just don't use it? stop at 14x? In the HVX200 and the sony, they might have chosen something like that. Now you have the option not to use it or to use it. And if still not satisfied: you can buy another decent lens... (not like another XL-series lens, no a true manual lens)

Okay, let's compromise here: at least they put a proper lens MOUNT on the HD100! I think the lens is a disaster, but the fact that they used a proper bayonet mount rather than a proprietary mount is definitely the right move.

Thanks for all your responses. I really do like the professional look of the JVC but if the standard lens is terrible there is no way I can attempt to afford to get another lens in addition to a £4k camera and still! be using HDV. I didn't want to come across as totally denouncing HDV, I am sure it has its uses and many people will be extremely happy with it but i am of the persuasion that if you can have something so much better (DVCPro HD ) for the same money, then thats the way i'm gonna go. I need to be getting the camera to continue making videos not continuously saving up to get a camera, then new lens, then etc...

Thanks all for all your help

Don't forget to factor in you P2/Firestore costs in order to use DVCPROHD. There are also additional Storage costs.

Yes, it's better, but it will cost more in most circumstances.
