HD Workflow

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this community and I'm seeking some advice. My friend is about 2 weeks away from the purchase of an HVX. :) I will be purchasing the editing system. About 5 years ago I went through something similar; friend bought XL1 and I bought a shiny new Dual-800 G4. Only this time I'm not interested in spending $4000 on a base system, if I don't have to. This leads to my question; if I'm shooting HD on this HVX, do I need a capture card - Aja, DeckLink HD, etc? If not, how do I get this HD footage on to my internal/external hard drive without compressing it all to hell? I know that I'll have to use P2 cards or a FireStore to capture the HD footage, but from there where do I go?

Please forgive me for asking such a basic question. It just seems that most of the people that post here have been using the camera for a while now and all I get are the answers to the complicated questions (which I am also grateful for). Thanks!

Eric

Spend $200-$300 on an external 250-500gig hard drive to hold your footage.

You can even add a nice cheap $150 200gig internal drive to use for streaming your footage off while working.

Make sure you get a decent video card.

It's really quite simple!

You record the HD footage to a P2 card, then, and this is depending on your hardware situation do one of the following...

You insert the p2 card into a pcmcia slot and dump the footage to drive.

You insert the p2 card into a p2store then you hook the p2store up to a laptop or computer using usb or firewire and dump the footage to disk

You plug the camera itself into a computer and dump the footage to disk.

The beauty (and the beast) of the HVX is that its an digital, tapeless, workflow, so capture is not an issue. Its about moving data files around.

I would really use the heck out of the search function on this board to get a comprehensive grasp of the solutions and challanges of using the HVX.

Its just data. So you just have to get the files onto your main edit hardrive (or an external drive. No Aja, no decklink no nothing. Just files transfer.
