HD to DV rack instead of p2?

Perhaps instead of paying bizarre amounts for the controversial p2 cards could i record hd directly to a laptop via something like DVrack? Is dvrack available for mac?

Hmmm, I'll try and answer this one to save Barry Green some time and sanity.

You can capture straight to a laptop via a compatible NLE. So far there is only Avid Xpress on PC and FCP on Mac that will do this.

There is no DVrack for Mac, nevermind an HD version of it. However, there is a new product called Redrock Revolution that may get ported to Mac in the near future that will fill that need.

See the posting here:

I hope I got that all somewhat right.

Barry should hire a team of assistants armed with a database of his posts to go around and answer repeats. This one is a hard one though, cause dvrack until recently didnt come up in the search, so we cant blame dmitri.

I had one -- his name was "thisiswells"! :)

Seriously, for a while there Brian was all over the place, answering everything before I could get near it. Gotta love that!

And ProjX v2.0 is spot-on. Only thing I'd add is that Serious Magic is highly interested in working towards developing a DVCPRO-HD-capable version of DV Rack (which I have dubbed "HD Rack"). That would give another option to PC users.

barry green replied to me saying HD Rack, which has not been announced or was it released GA, would be out by the time HVX200 came out at end of year.

i'll be capuring straight to a ultrportable laptop or 12" powerbook. right now, laptop disks are 100GB 5400RPM but at end of year, i am seeing reports that laptops could have 250GB disks and early in 2006 500GB laptop disks. so, you have to lug around a 12" laptop so run and gun won't work but this sure offsets these expensive P2 cards. I'm planning on getting a HVX at end of year, capturing to disk without P2 then wait several months until prices drop.

I posted on a topic called P2 a few days ago specifically about this. The HDD drives will be able to capture at 720p24 and should also at 1080p24

Just for clarification, I didn't say HD Rack would be out -- I said that Serious Magic is very interested in making such a product. And while I would hope that it would be out by the time the camera comes out, there can obviously be no guarantees until the people at Serious Magic make guarantees. Right now all they've said is "we're very interested, and we're talking to Panasonic".

It is my opinion (and this is opinion only) that the Serious Magic development team will have no problem producing a DVCPRO-HD-compatible "HD Rack" product. I am quite confident we will see it, and I would expect that they would try to release it as near to the release date of the HVX as possible. But please understand -- that's one outsider's opinion, not fact or press release or anything like that.
