I saw in your other thread that you were considering FX1...personally I'm not a fan of the FX1, I have a friend who has it and for one reason or another my footage from my DVX always looks better than his.
If you've gotten to know the DVX and understand its controls and capabilities, IMO you should move onto something similar, with similar capabilities - HVX/HPX/HMC? I'm hoping to upgrade soon, and these are my choices from which I'm deciding. I didn't want to go the DSLR route. Just save up a little more money and grab and HMC, those go for cheaper than the HVX/HPX.
Nope, almost all the features of the 150 is in the 40. You get manual everything, waveform monitor, touch to focus (or a great focus ring), xlr with the adapter, same recording modes and framerates, 3 year warranty, DRS, scene files, external focus/iris, three user buttons, etc. The difference really is in the chipset (1/4" cmos vs 1/3" CCD) and the form factor (removeable handle and xlr can make it quite a stealthy camera).
The 150 will definitely be able to handle low light a lot better than the 40, but in adequate light the 40 will be sharper. If you can afford the 150, go for it! Also, the XLR adapter on the 40 has a mic mount on it, or you could just use a shoe mount shockmount.
so basically the 150 is worth more of my money right?
*but if i want to have an on board light.... i cant
i also just realized that the 40 wouldnt be good because there is no record or zoom on the handle - which would make it a hassle to shoot skating or any kind of low angle shooting
Exactly, no camera is perfect for every situation. For skate videos with fast pans, etc. I wouldn't go with a CMOS chip if you have the choice. The 150 is pretty ideal for those sorts of things.
Do your best to get the 150, you'll be glad you did.
It's hard to find a used one, since they are still fairly new... I had the opportunity to use a HVX for a few days last month, and I LOVED IT!!! If you can get your hands on a used package with P2's on ebay, then totally go for it! I have used the HMC several times, and it is a nice cam, but I do not like the way the images look... Seems too "digital" -- not the same feel as the more film like images that the DVX and HVX's give...
