on my HPX171 (PAL ver) I set to 1080i and I get images (aprox) 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080, same , when I select 720p I get (aprox) 990x720 instead of 1280x720.

why is that?

fair enough, but since I have almost 500 pixels "less" (1440 < 1920) while recording on the 1080i res, dose that mean that my footage is of a different aspect ratio than what 1920x1080 usually has?

It's a different aspect ratio until you bring it into an editing program like Final Cut. Once you bring into FCS, the software adjusts the aspect ratio to 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720.

I assume the other editing options work the same way.

HD frame aspect ratio is always 16:9. Pixel aspect ratio can be different though. For standard broadcast 720p and 1080i/p pixel aspect ratio is 1, that is, pixels are square.

By the way, DV 4:3 and DV 16:9 are both 720x480 (or 720x576 for 50Hz systems).
