HD on SD monitor

Imagine I want to shoot HD because all advantages it brings for instance the vraiable framerates. I don't have HD monitor. I do have SD color corrector monitor.
Is not having a HD monitor keeping me from working with HD? Is the best way just downconverting to DV50 and then edit?
Do you guys edit with HD without HD monitor? any comment?
 
I use a capture card that has Component SD outs for monitoring (Kona 2) and connect that to my PVM 14L5 monitor via the Component connections.

works fine.
