HD on Normal DVD?

what is possible - shoot HD, compress to H.264 or MPEG-2 HD content, put as HD-DVD content on a standard DVD burnable media, and put into an HD-DVD player, than can connect to SDTV or HDTV. Of course, if only connecting to SDTV, ZERO benefit to the endeavor.

You CANNOT put HD content on regular DVD and have it play high def on regular DVD player.

There are some Windows Media 9 specialty players that can play back hidef WM9 files.

But I thought I could put HD content on regular DVD and have it play high def on regular HD-DVD or BluRay player, isn't it true?

Nope. What you can do is put the HD video files on there and certain players can read it. But actually burning it like a normal DVD is not possible. I don't think Blu-Ray players are even backward compatible with DVD.

Actually Gordon, it is true...

From Nero 7 premium Reloaded- http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/index.html

"Nero Vision lets you author and edit your High Definition content, transcode it into AVCHD format, burn it without any loss of quality onto a normal DVD, and watch it on Nero ShowTime or a blue laser drive such as a PlayStation® 3."

Now, I am not sure as to the compatibility with HD-DVD, but I do remember recently seeing a tutorial somewhere which demonstrated the workflow into HD-DVD on DVD media...For the life of me, cannot find the link.

what i want to know,
is can you burn HD onto a normal DVD,
have it play as SD on a normal DVD player...like not HD
and then have it play in an HD-DVD or Blu-ray or w/e as HD

Technology like HD-DVD or Blu-Ray burners is kind of a waste right now anyways because it's up in the air, we don't know if either of them will stay for sure.

What I find strange is that regular DVD can be upscaled and the benefit is visible. It almost sounds as if an upscaled regular DVD on an Hd screen might look similar in quality to a downscaled Hd originated DVD being show on an SD screen. Yikes.
