HD monitor shading...

With a TV Logic 5.6" monitor and plastic protection screen there was a fair amount of glare. It turns out the Hoodman H-R5.6 (designed for the Red 5.6" monitor) works real well to provide shade on the screen. Much better than the TV Logic sun hood IMO and folds nicely to fit in the case with the camera.

I have thje monitor but never got the plastic protector . Am thinking of just cutting a piece of plastic that I velcro on so its easier to remove, since I keep hearing about glare on the plastic protector.
How bad is the glare? Do you guys recommend I try my method or just go buy the plastic protector from TVLogic?

I think the TV Logic protector is good because it fits perfectly and tightly, and prevents dust getting in behind the protector and onto the LCD surface. It's not that glare-prone, particularly if you use a hood.

I think the plastic film protector is worth while in the rough environment of fast production, but it seems to me to be a bit more reflective than the bare TV Logic screen. You could tape or velcro plastic on the front, but I always like to protect the resale value of my equipment so that was never an option in my mind.

In harsh outdoor sun the reflections in the protective film make it harder to see what you need to see. That's why I wanted a hood.

I only saw two suitable hoods. TV Logic makes one that looks like its a semi rigid black plastic. I don't have one but read several complaints about them. The Hoodman designed for the Red monitor works like a charm and folds flat.

The RED hood does fit, but it's pretty snug. It obscures the buttons slightly on the back and sometimes I fumble for the power button. If you need something to be taken on and off frequently, I'd make a cardboard velcro attachment. For outdoors, I'm just using my Zacuto EVF which is works well and the function buttons are much easier to engage that the TV LOGIC and no glare problems.

I haven't had real problems with the buttons. Especially on/off because you hear the click. On the other side the strap comes right over the HD-SDI ports. The strap has to be maneuvered in between.

One thought is that the Hoodman hood has looped fabric as a cushion around the edge. Someone should try the hook side of industrial velcro on it. I bet it would stick. I don't want to use velcro though if I can avoid it.

I just bought the Hoodman H-R5.6 and it's too small not even close. Will research to see if there's more than one but this one is No Good...

Are you sure you got the right one? There are many here that find it perfectly acceptable.

The only way I can see it not working is if you have a large battery pack on the back of the monitor and you're trying to put it over the battery back. The straps should go beside the pack. Its snug, but not that snug.

Sorry guys, I was in a hurry, my bad. I was trying to fit it in the inside back of the hood. I haven't put my AF-100 battery pack on the camera yet, but powering through the plug in back which is what I'm doing so far, I see now it fits fine.
