HD in 4:3?

Hello and thanks for your time,
This may sound like a dumb question, so your patients is appreciated. I was wondering if there are any HD formats, that record in 4:3. I/my company is planning on purchasing an HD camera that records to P2 for a very green screen intensive show. As it will be mostly internet based (465x350 4:3), I have been leaning towards DV instead of HD, but after a bit of research I have come to the conclusion that HD will be better for pulling keys. To make a long story short I want more lines of resolution with a 4:3 aspect ration that records to P2... Dose this exist?

Thanks once again for your time,

Nope. There is no HD format that records 4:3, they're all 16:9.

But you could use an HVX200 in DVCPRO50, shoot 4:3 and get extraordinarily good keying from that.

Thanks!
Patssle, I have already thought of that, but then it becomes the issue of the time it takes to export cropped video, which in my tests adds a lot to the time of output, I would rather use DV. Also I can't justify all that extra space on the hard drive for video I won't be using.

Barry,
So is DVCPRO50 better resolution? How much better? Do you think it justifies buying an $8000.00 HD camera rather then a 3000.00 DVX100?... I really want quality keys, but if it isn't much of a difference then I am over it....

if it delivers on the internet it can be any aspect ratio you want it to be.

sounds like youre making problems for yourself from a set of misconceptions...

DVCPRO50 is better *color* resolution. It's still 720x480, like DV is, but it's got twice as much color information so it will hold up much better during chroma keying.

But hey, try something like Serious Magic's Ultra; you may find that you can pull adequate keys for your purpose from a DV camera.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Wgzn, I am not sure what you are talking about as far as a misconception. The end result of each show is to be played in a 4:3 aspect ratio player. Therefore I can't use any aspect ration I want, unless I wanted to deal with cropping or adding matte bars which I am trying to avoid. Maybe you can clarify your statement.

Barry,
Thanks a lot for your help, it sounds like we are going to go with HVX after all, its just a much better solution. I think its nice to also have the option of shooting in HD for other projects as well. So in your opinion the HVX is the way to go or is there a better HD camera in the same price range out there? (with p2 of course)... Also assuming you have experience with green screens, do you think its better to paint a studio wall or buy the green screen material?

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it...

Hey, I just shot a kid's TV plot with the HVX, and we shot so we could crop 4:3 if we need to, but the keys have been coming off amazingly. We shot in 720Pn. Check out the thread for some more stuff about the show.
