HD has messed with my 24pA!

Okay, so I got so used to shooting HD that, going back to a project from 3 years ago, I seem to have forgotten some issues with this film. I have read through everything here and elsewhere and don't believe it's the typical 24pA issues people have---but I could be wrong.

Basically, I have a 24pA documentary - I believe was captured corrected with the pulldown removal in FCP. It's a23.98 sequence. Progressive.

I have these horrible vertical lines through some of my footage. Here's a picture. You can see it in her face ((left side)

I need to get this out on DVD ASAP and I'm stuck!

Thanks

The good news: it has nothing to do with 24pA, pulldown, or interlace issues.

The bad news: that's typical 4:1:1 color. If you've gotten used to shooting at a higher resolution and a 4:2:2 color space, you're going to be noticing it like you never have before. I know it drives ME up the wall now.

However, I will say, you've got that image blown up considerably, and at typical resolution, it won't be as pronounced.

yeah that's not interlace or anything. but ture, you can kinda see the square texture on the edge of here face. it's a lot noticable when red color is shot with the DVX so I would say here skin is redish so that's why it's happening...
well you can add in more light next time. maybe that would help.

If it really concerns you, you can try some of the of the chroma smoothing techniques, either Magic Bullet deartifactor, the Chroma Smoother 4:1:1 effect, or the DV Rebel method, if you have After Effects.

When you encode for DVD, you will get some blockiness back, since it uses 4:2:0 color space, but you may see some improvement.

Thanks all. Now that I've been set in the right direction I have been able to do some improvements...makes me wonder how I survived pre-HD.. (and pre-4:2:2)
