HD DVD vs BlueRay news

Despite the capacity advantage that BlueRay offers, I would like to see HD-DVD win out for on simple reason...

Practicality.

The cost to the replication chain is much higher for BlueRay than HD. I have been involved with a number of intellectual property holders as a DVD authoring provider since early 1998. I remember well the amount of kicking and screaming that went on when they had to bear the expense of spinning up their first DVD-5 line. It took many of these faculties years to over come the economic hit that DVD made. Now of course, they are happy that they did, but if you ask any of them now, they aren't too interested in another big investment, especially when there are competing formats in the market place.

Time will tell, and certainly if history proves right again, betting with Sony is almost a guaranteed way to loose out (L Cassette, consumer Beta, mini disc, SACD, etc) other than redbook CD, they haven't had a winner yet.

It will be an interesting battle, but Microsoft coming down on one side could make for a big shift in the war.

Microsoft supporting HD-DVD also seems to make sense with their competing against Sony in the video game console market. i dont pretend to be a business person or know what Sony or Microsoft really thinks but i've heard the logic that Sony is betting on Blu-Ray taking off because it will be in the their PS3. so it sort fo makes sense that Mircosoft wouldn't want to support Blu-Ray because of that.

but i'll be the first to admit that these thoughts i just spewed were pulled right out of my a**. just speculation on my part.

All of the status quo vendors always want to stay with the evolutionary step, this is how the TV industry in the U.S. got stuck with NTSC. HDDVD is clearly nearing the end of its product life cycle while the Blu-ray spec holds far more data and is at the beginning of its product life cycle.

It will be more difficult and cost more but is probably the right way to go. Unfortunately, just like with NTSC versus RGB the better solution might not win. I have seen both stadards digitally projected and on professional level CRT's, Blu-ray is noticably better.

Personally, although I would like to see Blu-ray win out, I ultimately don't care as long as we get to one or both very soon. These standards commitees need to pull there collective heads out of their collective butts quickly. Let's get HD DVD of eother flavor out now...

It's interesting to see that Apple computers are going along with BluRay, especially since DVD Studio Pro will burn in HDDVD format. I can see BluRay outgrow HDDVDs, but it's really a matter of time before we can tell.

PS3's are a huge selling point for BluRay. I'm sure Sony will produce some sort of DVD player other than the PS3 so you can view these DVDs, but who knows, maybe they will just see how well sales go there.

Apple will play whichever side of the fence they have to play. I'm sure software vendors will make sure that either format could be burned.
