I think its pretty obvious. The A1 (Sony) would have an image comparable, or better than the HC1, since they were released near each other and the HC1 was much lower in price and decidedly consumer.

The HC3 is a "stripped down" version of the HC1. Look at the resolution. The resolution is "lower" than the HC1. If it has a lower resolution than the HC1, then it definately has even lower resolution than the professional A1. I know, I know, resolution isnt everything. But then again, it is...

Why would the HC3 have a lower rez than the HC1?

My sister wants a camera to document my new Niece! :) And they just got a 50 inch Plasma above the fireplace as well, i am recommending the HC3 for them , its just a perfect fit, but if the HC1 has a better rez and is cheaper it might be better?

Historically Sony has made a pro version and a consumer version of their camcorders (i.e., VX2000 and PD150, TRV900 and PD100A, HC1 and A1U, FX1 and Z1U, etc). There are typically a lot of differences (mainly features in the pro version that have been disabled in the consumer version). In all these cases the base imaging block (CCDs or CMOS chips, lenses, etc) have been identical; the differences are usually in audio (the consumer versions getting a 1/8" minijack audio port, the pro versions getting XLR inputs) and menu settings and such.

To say there is no difference at all between them would probably be a very inaccurate statement. I don't know the details of the HC1, HC3, and A1U, but traditionally they've made several significant differences between their pro and consumer product lines.

Barry is right about that; the FX1 doesn't support both 60i/50i; Black Stretch; a second CinemaTone setting; and more. The HC1 was very close to the A1, but it's been discontinued (they sold all the units very fast and there wasn't going to be another wave). The HC3 is very consumer-oriented, much more so than the HC1. keep that in mind.
