HC-X1000 - Very first impressions .. with a problem

- The Firmware update works and takes care of the 24p flicker issue -

My camera is now updated to 1.10 FW - And I will be selling it soon on the appropriate forum

I received the HC-X1000 from B&H yesterday. I got to shoot with the camera a few minutes today,
mostly around the house, getting to know the menus and have little unscientific (given the very short time) look at the 4k results compare to my gh4 on a timeline.

Anyway, this little camera is really impressive , the form factor , the 3 rings damering in the front... In general i have a very good feeling about it ... BUT

A very important BUT. Whenever I turn on the camera in 24p 100m (23.97). The images flickers badly ...
The same kinda of flicker you would get from a bad shutter value, the wavy type flicker we all know , and quite intense on top of that.

At first I though it might of been only on the monitor , but it is recorded and shows up on a premiere timeline.

Changing the shutter value from 1/48 and up will not do anything, in fact even normal 5600k daylight will also pump this way.

Now it seems (bear in mind I have done a 15 minutes test only) that whenever I change rec modes , let say I go to 4k 30p, the flicker stops, and if I go back to 24p the flicker is gone.

Now if I shut down the camera and turn it on again in 24p , it will start to flicker again .... Until I change modes and come back etc ....

The 24hz 24p cinema 4k mode doesn't seem to flicker ... only the 4k 23.97

I hope I don't have a defective camera cause sending back the camera from Canada to the US for maintenance is quite a pain. I really hope this is just a firmware issue ...

Please anyone with more info let me know !!!

Thanks and sorry for my english !

Hows does the low light look on the cam? Any other cams to compare low light too? I want to purchase so bad but the 1/2.3" sensor is scaring me.

Well like I said, I did not have the time to go through extensive test with it. From what I can tell right now it looks real sharp. Surprising actually. I just need to get this flicker problem sorted out... really , that is a major f... up for now ...

So, after a few more days, what do you think of the camera? I am anxious to get one but am holding off.

I have also noticed the flicker seems to go away when the camera is still. As soon as you pick it up and move it around the flicker comes back?!

Are you able you upload a short clip straight out of the camera that shows this? What would be good is something with fine detail against the sky. Only needs to be a few seconds long.

Also, have you confirmed what S0ftfx wrote about getting the problem to go away if you change to another frame rate and then back to 24? If so, at least you have a temporary workaround, and it will no doubt be fixed with a firmware update.

I'll have a look tomorrow! It seems to be if you turn the camera on and it's preset to 24p. If you change format it goes away. Turn off and on again - problem is back. Changing shutter speed has no effect. Keeping camera still problem seems to go away. Move camera - problem comes back. I think I've noticed it on 4k and C4K but need to double check that.

It didn't happen in the early model I tested. It happened in the next model, that had updated firmware. When I got that model back, I noticed the issue. As such, I am quite confident it should be a simple firmware fix.

That's reassuring - firmware update is no trouble. Hope it gets here soon. There is a workaround for the time being. Managed to shoot some sunset today, I'll try get my stuff uploaded!

I just flashed the camera with the new firmware. It seems to be working good now. The 24p fliker is gone :-)
I will however sell that camera and get another GH4. It is a perfect form factor, the ergonomics are just amazing.
However I shoot a lot of indoor theater , jazz show and very low key performances. The very low light performance is not enough for our needs.

I will be posting the add is the "For Sale or Want to Buy" forum ... soon
