Hazy room look?

http://youtu.be/wHyalVRUXrA I love the atmosphere in this video that is created from the haze in the club. I went out and bought a fog machine from a party store around here in hopes of duplicating this type of look but for some reason the fog either dissapates quickly, doesn't show up on the camera like the the fog in the music video, or quickly floats up to the top of the ceiling(the building im shooting in has about as high a ceiling as the one in the video. What am I doing wrong?

There are different types of man made atmosphere. Haze sits in the air longer, is more even and is much different then the plooming smoke from party-smoke machines.

You need haze instead of fog. You can get those results with fog, but you won't keep it looking like that for more than 30 seconds. Haze will do everything you want.

I don't know what was used on this Music Video... hey a 'music' video with actual musicians... but I digress... But there are a couple of thoughts that occur to me. The shots of the club in the first few seconds, has the camera pointed directly at the bright lights. So, there's lots of flair which will give a 'hazy' look. In BTS features, I've seen crew basically using some form of 'dust', others may have some names of substances other than say 'chalk'... or 'flour', but basically the particulate has to stay suspended. The 'smoke' machines produce a cloud which dissipates somewhat quickly. perhaps because the particulate is 'too heavy'. Speaking of dust on the set... I've also seen in the BTS, the crew wearing masks... and the talent also until it's time to be in front of the camera... So, I would guess it is not a setup for those with lung issues...

Appreciate the help. Would a Fazer work or do I need to go full on with a hazer? The haze in a can looks good. How big of a room does this fill up?

A fazer is not a hazer. We have very good luck with the LeMaitre Neutron and MVS hazers - unbelievable hang-time and very fine texture with no residue. Let me know if you need pricing on these.

A word of caution... please research your atmosphere material before using. Some are really not good to breathe in for long periods of time, some leave slippery residue on everything, and some can have other dangerous side-effects.

Simply educate yourself before spending 12 hours breathing in something. :)
