Hazy image

I am having problems with some video that I have just shot on my DVX using 30p. I was covering a boat race from my vantage point on the beach and I had to zoom in all the way to get in close to the action. Obviously, the DVX's zoom will not give a great closeup like a telephoto lens would, but it was the best I could do at the time. After capturing and playing back the image, the footage looks really gray and washed out. While I was shooting it, I was aware of this and I played around with different scene file settings and exposure levels, but it still didn't make that much of a difference. Part of the problem I think was the nature of the weather and the ocean haze, but having a polarizing filter would have helped also. Does anyone here have experience shooting oceans and what might some good tips be, especially when shooting 30p? Also, zooming in all the way obviously reduces my depth of field and also lets less light in, so could this be a part of the problem as well? Last thing, anyone has anyone here ever used a telephoto converter and would the application work well with the DVX?

Well I have a B+W UV Haze filter so I don't think that is the problem. I had a friend running a second cam from a 10-story balcony and he had the same haze despite his height. I definitely will be adjusting in post, but it sucks now trying to work with a crappy image. My f-stop was at 8.0 but I of course had to use both ND filters.(maybe thats the problem) Are there some things I'm missing when it comes to shooting 30p? I'm using the default scene file F5 setting and I'm just switching the frame rate to 30p.
