What is sse?

can I play the footage on my normal lcd comp monitor in fcp and see it how it will look on a tv?

Is it neccesary to have an hd monitor?

Can g4 dual with 2 gig ramb run the hd footage?

the sse(split screen effect) is a vertical line down the center of the image. one side of the screen will be slighty lighter then the other half. yes you can play ur footage on you normal lcd monitor but just remember you are not going to see it as vibrantly as u would with an hd monitor. so no its not necessary but it makes it look nicer and helps when altering you image.

Does the sse come on if you choose a split screen setting or its just a line that occurs when shooting normal footage?

besides the sse what are some other flaws that people have complaints about and if you can explain these in detail so I can understand exactly what to expect when I buy one.

thanks

SSE is not an effect that you choose, it's a side effect of the way the camera reads the chips. You may or may not ever see the effect. When it happens, you can frequently adjust things in order to get it to go away; changing white balance or exposure or lighting conditions can get it to go away. Also, leaving the camera on and letting it warm up can minimize the appearance of split-screen. JVC recommends you let it warm up for five minutes before shooting.

It is more prone to happening in dark conditions, or when shooting a wide swath of solid color (like the sky).

Whether it's something you should be concerned about is a personal decision. Some people never have it, or shoot in ways such that it doesn't manifest itself, or haven't noticed it and are very happy with their HD100's; others aren't so willing to deal with it.

The other complaints center around the lens, primarily on chromatic aberrations (pink & green fringing, shadowing and outlining) and breathing (an apparent change in focal length when you move the focus ring). Breathing is more discernable in medium to wide-angle shots, C.A. is more prevalent the more you zoom in. Again, some people never see these things or don't let them bother them. You'll have to test it and see if you're happy with it. All those issues can be circumvented by using an optional lens like the 13x3.5 wide-angle zoom; it's up to you if your budget allows using that lens.

Battery life with the stock batteries is very short; maybe 40 minutes per battery, and they take about 4 hours to charge. There is a solution though, if you invest in the IDX or Anton-Bauer batteries you can get four to five hours per battery with those systems.

Another thing to be aware of is editing; JVC footage is incompatible with Sony HDV in the editing suite, and some NLE's (like Avid and FCP) don't support the 24p mode. You can get around that by using some 3rd-party plug-ins like Cineform or Lumiere.
