Have DVX 100A want a rough look

I have a DVX 100a I am shooting a full feature in San Diego, I am becoming more familar with my camera everyday but I'm wondering if anyone knows any quick tips or tricks to help me get the look that you see in the movie Traffic in the Mexico shots ( like when the are outside in the desert and it looks like it's overexposed and gritty). Any help on this would be great. Also any tips on how to get that same look that you see through out the movie 8mm. Thanks!

bones...

That is really more of a post question.  None of that is in-camera.  You'd be surprised what their original, un-color-treated footage looks like.

Play around with the color-correction tools in your NLE or buy a movie-look suite program such as Magic Bullet.  They just came out with a dumbed-down version for $299.

For those specific looks, try crushing your blacks and really raising the whites, also desaturating and adding yellow/oranges to your midtones.

Use a noise filter to add the grit.

True, the 'look' of the film in Traffic is a post issue but more than that can be attributed to the style.

The film has a real docu-drama feel to it as well, lots of handheld work, steadicam, push zooms.

Are you using a Mattebox?

I had a feeling that I would have to do alot of it in post, and no I won't be using a mattbox, most of that I'm shooting is in doors at night,so I did'nt see a need for one other then looks.
Thank you for your quick replys!

Buy or rent the full blown Criterion DVD version of the movie. Some great stuff on there...they touch a lot on the style and editing.

If you want a grainier look to your footage, a good trick is to underexpose by a stop or stop and a half, and then push the levels in post.

With my latest film, I wanted a more grainy feel to the image, and this worked out great!
