Have a DVX 100 and Not Sure if I Need It

Good morning and happy Monday. This is one of the greatest vid forums on the net. Ive learned so much in the last 10 days from reading the post. You guys and gals are great.

My background is music (writing, producing, engineering etc) and now I want to conquer the world of video. So I am an extreme newbie to this field from a technical standpoint. I have been on numerous video shoots but as an observer or a image consultant. So forgive me if my question seem to academic for some of you video powerhouses out there.

My objective is to shoot music videos, short films, documentaries and interviews to be viewed on the Internet and DVD's. With that said ........

I own a DVX100 and a Canon HF10 and just inherited a HF200. I love the DVX but I am using the HF10 more (because of size mostly - video quality seems to be a lot clearer even in SD mode, but I know it is because I am not fully acclimated with all of the DVX functions). I was thinking of selling it and getting a DSLR that shoots HD Movies (I have read the many threads and I am still considering the pros and cons). I love the feel of the DVX but I am just not using it as much and it is collecting dust.

So, if you where in my lens, what would you do? I appreciate all of your feed back.

Take care .......

well if u aint using it sell it.

that said...as you have stated, u possibly arent using the dvx to its full capabilty. And if you're not doing that then dslr's arent going to help u much, because they arent a walk in the park to shoot with ...AT ALL. If you were using the dvx to its fullest then switching to dslr's would still be challenging but at lease the theory of it all is the same. The dvx used fully is a very good camera to learn how to shoot properly that will carry over to other cameras...whatever the may be.

So just letting you know...if ur switching to dslr's that can be a headache to the experienced person much less an inexperienced person like urself. Not trying to scare you...just keeping it real. Good thing is that we all can learn :) ...so hopefully you wont become 2 frrustrated. This is in regards to on set shooting and post (editing). Whole nother kettle of fish...and you'll need a PC that can keep up with it in case u dont already have one.

In the end ur left with beautiful footage if u know what u are doing though :)

edit: i forgot to mention...if ur getting a dslr ur gonna have to buy alot of ad ons to make it functional in the capacity you'd like, example monitor or some kinda viewfinder (zfinder ect), shoulder mount/glidecame (or some kinda stabilizer) external sound device amoungst other things.

what you can do is look on the hmc150. looks and feels like the dvx, shoots really good HD. Dedicated video camera with XLR inputs so u dont have to go with external sound devices. Very good camera to learn on also (dvx's true successor)

So if ur gonna sell...sell the dvx and one of the canons and pick up an HMC150

Thanks Jam -

I appreciate your input. The HMC150 looks awesome! I will definitely look into it.

I have a powerhouse PC and have been editing on Vegas Pro for over a year now. Thats one area I excel at. Working on DAW's with Protools, Cubase and Nuendo have assisted me in the editing process of video. I just need to focus more on the recording side of things.

Thanks again for your input. Going to put my DVX on Craiglist now.

Take care.
