have a 170, get a nanoflash?

Hi guys, i have been happily using the 170 and p2 workflow for a while now. I have the option of buying a ex1r + a nanoflash but am seriously also considering saving the $$$ and just getting a nanoflash to pair with the 170.. What do you all recommend doing? My output is going to be for broadcast in HD to Discovery/NGCI and the likes..What would you do, and why?

I would stay with what you have, it might not be as high a resolution, but still considered HD. And the Pani has a better color space, and warmer softer image than the ex1. The ex looks more videoish. Im not saying the ex1 is not a beautiful cam, it is. But To my eyes, the pani is more appealing to look at. Plus the p2 workflow is awesome. So I would take wgzn advice and look into the black magic as an option to what you have.

wow, i was NOT aware of the blackmagic design hyperdeck, its so much cheaper! Checking it out to see what format it shoots on, color space, etc as opposed to the nanoflash. Color space, stock for stock DVCPROHD vs XDCAm, the DVCPRO is superior, but once we are using an external recorder, it is down to image sensor size and lens, as all codec/compression is out the window.

So, my question was, stay with 170 and get an external recorder (hyperdeck/nanoflash) or get a ex1r + a recorder. ?

if you dont mind me asking you to elaborate on your statement, in what way is it going to be more versatile? Keep in mind i'm pairing either with a nanoflash where codec is out of the question now, just lens capabilities, some camera features and sensor size..

I frankly don't think you're going to get much, if anything, out of an external recorder on an HPX170. I think the stock codec is delivering probably everything the camera is generating.

Well, I'm saying that the onboard DVCPRO-HD is good enough to deliver anything the HPX170 can generate, so -- I doubt you'd see much if any improvement when using an external recorder, and certainly not $3,000 worth of improvement.

So the question is -- if you're happy with what you've got, why do you have to do anything? Your first post says you're happily using what you've got, so why change? What is it you're looking for?

dont get drunk on specs. sensor size is just part of the equation...

what you will get with a nanoflash or hyperdeck is an arguably much more reliable long form recorder than the likes of an fs100

some guy is selling a nanoflash in the marketplace right now for $2100. if you dont get it. i might...

well, i've sold a series filmed with a hpx500 and hpx170 to discovery channel all over europe. The 500 is a fantastic camera minus a few short comings, but for the new project, i can't lug around a big cam.. So i need something that has a larger than 1/3" ccd that can take A cam duties, but is still small-formfactor-ish, and can do it all. So, i thought of upgrading what I had, ie. 170 + nanoflash.. Then i saw that the ex1r looks pretty good too, especially when the potential is unlocked w a nanoflash! That was my reasoning. Any help/advice appreciated. Thanks a lot fellas

If I were you, I would check out the fs100, Maybe use what you have till it comes out, Of course that is if your interested. It does have a beautiful s35 sensor, whick is fantastic for low light, and the sought after shallow dof look, plus you can use about any lens out there on it. Just a suggestion. The ex1 prices will pfobably come down a little after this is released too.

Yeah, i've seen reviews on it, it just doesnt seem very conducive to the run and gun type shooting i will be doing; i've also been looking at the af100...same issue with that.

it just dawned on me. what i saw on their website (with the monitor) is the $5000ish gemini. the nanoflash, new is about $2800. suddenly, the one on the marketplace isnt the steal i thought it was...

not interested in the gemini or any other cam; out of the kit I have, is it worth adding a nanoflash, or is it worth getting a new ex1r + nano flash pair. I'm really leaning towards the ex1r combo..

If you don't need it now, you may wait for the HPX250 this fall.

AVC-Intra on P2 cards with full 1920x1080 1/3" cmos sensors and 21x lens.

Hello

This is Andy with Convergent Design, With either Combination, nanoFlash and the EX1, or 170, You will most likely see an amazing difference in Quality compared to the internal codec, (depending on your application of course) the more complex the image is, or if you do a lot of green screen work. Many customers have referred to the Panasonic HDX 900 or the Sony EX1 / EX3 to be the perfect combination, allowing the most flexibility no matter what your application may be, I would suggest contacting our head of sales (Dan Keaton) for a demo, which will help you with your future decisions.

Best Regards
