Haunting Songs

It's Halloween... but I want to know what the most haunting song is that does not have Halloween themes. To me a song must have a reverberating melancholy nostalgia to sound haunting. I'm curious to hear others opinions of what makes a song 'haunting'.Top two off the top of my list is "The Ghost in You" (this counts because it's not really about a 'ghost' and "A Whiter Shade of Pale"

How about you guys?

Couple from me

And this one of course from the doors - Apocalypse Now - one of the most haunting non horror films I can ever recall.

My criteria: chills on my shoulderblades.
Eno - On Some Faraway Beach

Eno/Cale - Spinning Away

30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill

and, of course,
Five Finger Death Punch - The Bleeding

That's enough...there are a million of them. A lot of the time, it takes listening to the whole thing for the build-up, and/or repeat listenings...or just being in the mood.

I like a lot of John Murphy's works. I'm also a big fan of movie scores in general, and often listen to haunting movie scores to get me in the mood for writing.

Murphy (Adiago in D Minor) - Surface of the sun (for Sunshine) - a modified version of this song was used for Kick-Ass

Then some songs just really hit me in their build up:

30 seconds to mars - a beautiful lie

Now while not as haunting, it still stirs up similar emotions, especially at the build-up
Muse - Hysteria

I may be young, but I love some of the classics as well:
House of the Rising sun - The Animals

Yeah love that Chris Isaak track, dare I say it ... If I were gay etc etc

Another one from me.

Perhaps, back to being more of what Ryan had in mind... Joan Baez won a Grammy for this song she wrote about her relationship with Bob Dylan. I dig the Judas Priest cover; I find it to be more... "haunting".

Diamonds and Rust

Chris, if memory serves me correctly Adagio for Strings is the #1 most used song that people listen to while they commit suicide. That fact alone is haunting enough for me. Good selection.

This is my choice:

I'm not sure if it counts since all of the movies come out at Halloween. This song creeps me out every time.
