Has there ever been a hero that becomes the villain?

I'm asking in general, not superhero films. Im looking for a film where the lead character is an assumed good person throughout the entire movie without a hint of evil, until the very last scene where his intentions are revealed, is there a film?

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm on a walk as I type this.

"The Ruling Class"(1972) is probably for me the most clearly 'hero->UltimateEvil', all though during the second portion one gets the feeling that 'things are not right, and evil is going to come soon'.

All "unreliable narrator" films then? A trick played in the storytelling? Maybe there's no other way to do this sort of film, given the time we spend with the protagonist?

Annakin was evil by 'yippee'... :Drogar-KnockedOut(D

Well, he's not assumed to be good until the end of the film as you suggest, but Citizen Kane traces a man's journey from the innocence of his childhood to his deathbed as a bitter, powerful tyrant.

Anakin Skywalker ?

The problem with Anakin Skywalker is we all knew he was Darth Vader... and so the ultimate transition from 'good to bad', had to occur, and that, with quite a few other reasons, the
Star Wars 1-III just didn't come off well at all...

Now, on the other hand, if Senator Palpatine didn't have such a unique voice... and didn't act so swarmy all the time... his coming out as Ultimate Evil could have been what is being
asked for...

And for a bunch of people who are 'in tune with the force'... the fact that all the big wig Jedi 'missed' feeling the Black Hole of the Force in Palpatine... is just one big reason why
the whole series fails big time...

Just about as bad, is in the first sequence of 3, Darth Vader, able to detect Obiwan on the Battle Star, yet can't figure out that the bare... welll not bare... until episode VI... slip of a
girl in front of him has midichlorians busting out her ears, and happens to be his daughter, and happens to be Luke's sister... (recall at the time, Darth apparently has had more interaction
with Princess Leia, and she, having gained some skill as an 'operative', should have been giving off The Force, big time... just a brief wiff of space peanutbutter breath from the child Anakin was enough for whatshisface to take the boy in as a student...)

But I digress...

In 2001 a Space Odyssey it was proposed that an evil genius nuclear rocket scientist would be allowed to design the spaceship but the idea proved to controversial for Kubrick to accept.

Dark Nuclear Lord inVader is based on a true story. Stanislaw Ulam inventor of the hydrogen bomb also invented an atomic rocket powered by thousands of atomic bomb explosions. In the 1950's Stanislaw Ulam was recognized by Werner Von Braun as a hero because his rocket was a peaceful plowshare designed to transport men to Saturn and later to the Stars. But by the 1960's Stanislaw Ulam turned into a villian and turned his rocket into a Death Star that could lift a thousand nuclear warheads into Earths orbit in order to be dropped on Russia.

Stanley Kubrick contemplated showcasing Ulam's work for the movie 2001 but decided against it because Ulam's Death Star reminded him of Dr. Strangelove. The Death Star concept would later appear in George Lucas' Star Wars.
