Has Rec709 4K2HD been changed on latest firmware update - seems flatter

Hello,

I will start off by saying that I am not sure if this is an issue with the latest firmware update or just a mere coincidence. But it seems to me like the last couple of times I have used my Odyssey 7Q after updating the firmware, my 4K2HD prores (rec 709) files seem to be flatter (for lack of a better term). They seem to require a little more tweaking than the old firmware.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Maybe Mitch can confirm if there was any kind of change to the 4K2HD algorithm in this latest update that would explain this?

I am considering going back to the previous firmware. I assume it is easy to revert back.

Which gamma are you in? REC709, REC709 800%, or Slog2? The 4k to ProRes will take all 3 of those gammas. And do you have the REC709 LUT applied if in Slog2 or REC709 800% or is it turned off? Obvious questions but I thought I'd start by asking that first.

I am using REC709. I have about 25 hours of record time using the 7Q prior to the update. I have always used REC709, it just seems like there was a change in footage appearance after the update.

In that case then I haven't noticed so you could be right. Another silly question, brightness/contrast settings are the same on the monitor?

Mitch will probably chime in.

I think a fair bit has changed. I was actually shooting with someone else's Odyssey the other day, running the previous stable release and then tried swapping onto mine (with the latest firmware) and the director freaked out because the image was so much brighter (and hence looked noisier). So I think the new release has had an update to all the LUTs.

It was announced with the firmware update that the rec709 4K 2 HD was fixed because it was too contrasty in the previous version. I have not tested it but I can say Warner Bros did not like the way it looked before and asked to stick with the look of the native recording (ProRes HQ) after they compared the 2 results.

You have touched on 2 issues that I am noticing. The image does appear brighter and to my eye more "washed out". I have also noticed that it does appear to have more noise. Now keep in mind that I am seeing this using REC709, so there is no LUT available for this profile (that I am aware of) and I am seeing this difference in the recorded image.

As stated in the Release Notes, we have adjusted the REC709 gamma and color matrix in the 4K2HD mode as we have also done in some others. Previously we were not an accurate representation of REC709, with heightened contrast and overly saturated colors, plus the exposure level did not correspond to that of the camera's internal recording. These changes were made to adjust for all that. The S-Log2 remains unaffected.

Please note that it is quite easy for you to revert back to a previous firmware build if you wish. We have all of the firmware builds archived on our website.

Thank you for the clarification. I think for now I will revert back to the previous firmware until 4K2HD 60p is available.
