Does anyone have experience with the AJ-HD1400 deck?

I'd be interested to hear comments on using this deck. what apps do you use and on what platform to talk to this deck? I would especially like to know if anyone uses this with Canopus Edius software or a Matrox Axio setup.

I would also like to know if anyone has comments on its ability to up/down/cross convert footage that they shot with a HVX.

Thanks

Jason

I used it on a tv spot I did. What I can tell you is my experience with this deck with the HVX:

1st- you cannot do a passtrough signal trough firewire from the HVX to the deck and then HD SDI or SDI out with it. There will be jumped and skipped frames. In ordr to HD-SDI out the footage, you have to first record your footage to DVCPRO HD tape, and then HD-SDI out.

2- The deck recognizes the camera fine, but it has many unique menus and you have to change some of the settings in order for it to recognize: its not immediate plug and play ( I'm talking Pal, here)

3- If you have an HD-SDI in capture card, I don't see why you won't be able to use this deck with any NLE that has the dvcpro HD codec, or any other.

Hope this helps

Hi:

We have two of them here. They are goood decks, the menu structure is a bit weirder than the already weird 1200s we have been using.

We shoot with the HVX-200s plugged in, the deck works well as a capture deck.

We interface the deck with FCP 5.1.2, Avid Xpress DV and Avid Symphony Nitris, it works fine with all three.

If you need a cheap HD deck, it's a no-brainer, goodd deck. BTW, DVCProHD, as a format, is much more susceptible to dirty heads and dropouts than larger 1/2" HD formats, many of the 1200s we used to rent had problems with head clogs. That tiny little head rotating at 9,000 rpms is more susceptible than a larger diameter head drum rotating at a slower speed on a D5 or HDCAM deck.

All the best,

Dan

thanks for the feedback. i'll be sure to keep my tapes clean and send to my tech for regular cleaning.

puredrifting, when you interface with FCP and AVID is that via HD-SDI or a firewire port?

Hi:

Always via SDi with FCP (Kona 3) and with the Nitris.

We use the analog outs to go to Xpress DV for NSTC off-line.

Best,

Dan
